I've seen plenty that do provide some protection
Also good checkered wood grips will eat my skin too, and I know, I could change to other grips. For instance that Kimber even in your holster would eventually start grating on my skin. One time I really wanted a S&W 3913 for concealed carry but it has too many things sticking out the lefhand side so I had to pass.
I'm the kind that generally doesn't use a holster for concealed carry because it adds so much bulk. (I'm sorry to say that considering who I'm talking to, but I also do have a box full of holsters that I use for certain occasions.)
