Most everybody tunes down a half step these days to make it easier on the vocalists and to discourage drunken harmonica players from asking to sit in. And string bends are limited by the width of the fretboard, everybody bends their strings to the max. It's a heck of a lot easier with 9s than it is with 13s, which is what was wrecking Stevie Ray's hands.
