He used heavier gauge strings.....
...and down-tuned half a step to lower string tension so he could do those monster bends he did without breaking strings. His tone was more a reflection of those early Fender pickups, and a combination of 2 early Fender amps, with an early Marshall combo, and a Leslie speaker box (and of course a Vox wah-wah pedal).
