In theory, they should be the same, but every powder manufacturer and grain size and even lots vary a little by density.

When I load BP in handgun rounds for fun, or back when I shot them in CAS, I would load by volumetric measure, either the sliding brass tube style for loading muzzle loading rifles, a specific tube on my powder measure or the old Lyman 55 that I unfortunately lost in a move.

I have been loading some more precise ammo as of late, for a .450 BPE double rifle and while I’m not shooting long range or with very precise sights, I want to give it every chance I can. For that, I’m losing by weight to be more consistent. I’ll throw a charge close to what I want, dump it on the scale, then add a little extra to bring it up to the desired weight. Then I’ll pour it down a drop tube and place a wad on top, then compress it with a die I cobbled together before adding grease cookies and seating a bullet.

I have a Pedersoli sharps in .45/70 with a decent tang sight. I need to load up some more precise ammo for it and give it another try with BP. At least that would take out one variable and mainly just leave the poor quality of the shooter to blame for any accuracy issues!
