Upcoming Tests
I sorted out all the Winchester brand cartridges .. the ones with the WIN headstamp. I have not measured the length of all of them .. I have close to thousand! But I did measure about 125 of them.
The shortest I have measured was .740”
The longest one was .755”
Interestingly there were not many of them. The majority ran between .745” and .750”. I chose cases of .745” and .750” and set them aside. Then I loaded them using 3.4 gr. of Bullseye. I weighed each powder charge. Then I weighed the bullets I was loading and chose the ones between 124.1 grains and 124.3 grains.
Last I used random Winchester cases without measuring their length. I set the powder measure to throw 3.4 gr. of Bullseye and chose random bullets without weighing them. This will be my “CONTROL” load.
The only other 9mm I ever owned was Colt Combat Commander in 9mm. It was partial to cases .750" long. By using those length cases and changing nothing else the group sizes were cut almost in half!
You probably read the article years ago but for anyone interested it's on Leverguns website at
https://www.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/9mm_reloading.htm
It will be interesting to see if the Star is as sensitive case length.
