Jackshaft from a defunct riding mower deck
-short enough to carry unobtrusively, great balance, heavy enough to be effective but not so heavy as to be a pain to carry. Easily breaks ice, safety glass, bones, etc. and will baton a big knife through some serious wood. Easy and cheap to obtain at your local lawnmower repair shop.
I will never be without one.
