consider the standard carry handle model

The height of the standard rear aperture sight above the bore centerline is just high enough to fit everybody, even if it is maybe 1/10" too high for some people.

If you take a standard AR and mount an optic sight on top of the carry handle, it will be too high for precision shooting because your cheek will be too far above the buttstock. If you take a standard flattop rifle and put normal scope mounts on it, you can't get your face low enough to see through the sights. Most people need the center of the scope about 1.4" above the top of the rail in order to see though it. I'm going to guess that the scope in the photo is too high for a good cheek reference fit on the buttstock. Even with a standard front sight you can still put the scope down low and see around the front sight.
