7.62mm Sturmgewehr

I personally like the AR/Stoner system for 5.56mm carbines and rifles however never really warmed up to the big bore ARs. I had a Armalite AR10 Infantry rifle and while reliable and accurate it weighted 10lbs. Sold it and never went back to .30 ARs.

If one is looking for a really good choice in a full caliber autorifle they would be hard pressed to do better than the PTR/HK 91 series. The new ones have gone back to the HK spec chamber and will shoot anything that the bolt will close on and fire. The old model target PTR91 were set to ONLY shoot commercial ammo as a way to improve accuracy. Still, the rack grade PTR GI models will outshoot all but the fanciest M14s and leave any FAL in the dust. Most PTR GI91s will hold 1.5 MOA with ball and shoot match grade ammo into half that. They are as reliable and durable as an AK. They are a modular design that will accept any number of readily available stocks, furniture, sights, etc. They are handy compact rifles a foot shorter than the M14 or FAL. Mags and parts are cheap!

Some will say that the fluted chamber destroys the brass however I have reloaded for them since Mel Tappan (that will date it for you old guys) sold me on them with no problems. The only issue in reloading is to find the brass because it leaves the rifle as a secondary projectile upon firing. One should not stand to the right side of a 91 shooter.

I have a number of rifles and consider the PTR GI91 the best of the .30 autoloaders.

I had an original HK91 back when and sold it to a guy in 1984 to raise money to buy a gold Rolex DateJust. When he brought it home, his wife packed her bags and went home to momma. I still have the watch and he still has the HK and a different wife. He thanks me for selling him the rifle every time he sees me.
