Yeah, everytime you write about something you are doing there, I think of Walla Walla. I was on my way to a gunshow at the fair grounds there one Saturday morning and it was so foggy, I could barely see past the hood of my pick-up. Got there and boy was I glad I hadn't turned back. I found a model 17 with a 6.5" barrel that someone had rounded the butt and front sight, added a red insert, and white outline rear sight. They did a beautiful job on the butt, it looked like a factory job. It had some custom walnut grips that were kinda plain jane, but other wise was a really nice gun. The first time I shot it, I was expecting to sight it in, but it shot right to point of aim with the ammo I had. Later, I tried some factory round butt K-frame grips, but they wouldn't fit. So, I shot it with the custom grips for a while. I found a set of smooth target grips at a show that were kind of beat up so the price was only five bucks. I put them on the seventeen and cut them to fit. Then, sanded them down and rubbed them good with true oil. To this day they are still on the gun. I took it on a trip up above Hell's Canyon out of Asotin. On my forest service map was a place in that area called "Grouse flat". The little voice in my head said hummm!! My seventeen and I made a little stroll through that area and lo and behold I saw a couple of Grouse. One was on a log so I decided to try for his head. I figured I'd have supper or a clean miss. The little seventeen knocked him off that log like a ducky at a carnival. It has been my favorite ever since.
