How much eye relief are you using?
In my limited experience with red dot sights I have found that they work better for me if they are located at least to the front of the rail on a flat top AR.
In fact my preference is the red dot on the rail with a co-witness to the iron sights. This way as you instinctively line up the irons you see the dot floating out in front.
When the red dot is located close to the eye like a telescope it does not work well for me.
