It is not the way to go, loops are better. the drop pouch

gives you a handful of cartridges to sort out, one handed, while trying to reload. Individual loops, while it takes more motion , gives one far more control over each cartridge. Drop pouches were updated DRAMATICALLY by John Bianchi's speed strips. the main benefit was having one "clip" of ammo to control rather than 5 or 5 loose rounds. Secondary, the ability to load 2 rounds at a time speed up the reloading process on swing out cylinder and break open guns.
For your purposes, a cartridge belt or slides with loops will be the fastest most deft way to reload that lever gun.
Additionally you could entertain the idea of Col Cooper's Scout reload of a sliding try containing individual cartridges in the bottom of the butt stock, but the cost benefits ratio would probably fall in favor of a second gun for your son.
Don't over think it, get a slide on you strong side and have have fun. If you need more ammo than the gun and a reload, carry an AR or something belt fed:-D
