Centerfire Scope on a 22?

by RangerBob, Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 14:51 (4423 days ago)

I know that the paralax for 22 scopes is set at 50yds and that most centerfire scopes are set at longer range . . . most at 100yds.

But how much practical problem will I see if I mount a Leupold M8 on a 22?

I'm not talking about a benchrest rifle, but I would mount it on a rifle that is capable of 1/2" at 50yds. Would a centerfire scope mess me up?

I could buy a rimfire scope, but If I don't like it I don't have another 22 to put it on. If I pick up a used Leupold centerfire scope, I would have it to use in other places.

What do you think?

I have seen it done quite a bit, Not a big deal for most

hunting .22s. If it really gives you problems(Which I doubt) you'll have a good scope for the next rifle...;-)

Centerfire Scope on a 22? I use a Weaver on my .22 LR

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 16:08 (4423 days ago) @ RangerBob

Contender carbine barrel for metallic silhouette. My problems have nothing to do with the scope sight or rifle or ammo... :-|

I use a Leupold fixed 4 on my 10-22 and it works great.

Have Bushnell centerfires on our 22s

I guess if it were serious target shooting there might be an issue.

Centerfire Scope on a 22?

If you have good cheek weld and practice holding the same way each shot you'll be OK.

When you put it on sight in on a spot the size of a squirrels head at about 30 yards and then slowly move your head up and down. The crosshairs will move up and down enough to miss the target. No problem if you cheek the gun each time the same.

That's actually one of my concerns. I have an old steel tube Weaver 22 scope on the rifle now (Marlin 39). It looks perfect on the old rifle, but it's pretty limited. The clarity is poor, the eye box is tiny, and the FOV is narrow.

But I've noticed that the rifle is just not stocked for a scope. Even this tiny 7/8 tube scope make me lift my head off of the stock. And that's not easy to do well with the tiny eye box.

The gun will shoot tiny groups with a scope, but I may actually hit better from field positions with the open sights since I can get a much better cheek weld.

I'm hoping that a scope with a larger eye box will allow some more flexabiliy in head placement. But that could be bad news if the paralax is screwy.

Depends.........

Standard rule...spend as much on scope as the rifle....on a 1022 plinker any solid 4x is all you need...

Moving up to higher quality rifles the need for quality scopes go up...

This 1022 Target is perfectly matched with a Leupold 3.5-10x 50mm AO in that it will consistantly shoot groups under 1/4 at 50 meters with Lapua Midas M ammo...the AO allow a perfect focus and parilax at any range...

The rifle is actually quite capable. I've shot .35" 5-shot groups at 50yds . . . .with an old steel-tube Weaver 22 scope and CCI mini-mags.

But an 18" long scope would look stupid on a Marlin 39.

I want to get get the best performance I can out of the old rifle, but it needs to be somewhat compatible with the platform.

BTW - Love that Ruger.

Instead of workin' so hard to make...

This Linebaugh will shoot through 3 feet of meat and bone as easy as shooting through a loaf of bread and knock a 1" cork out the back side.

Centerfire Scope on a 22?

I had a 2x7 Leupold that was not being used and sent it back to them to adjust the paralax for a 22 long rifle. Cost $15.00. Didn't take much more then a week or so to get back. I wanted a quality scope for my CZ 452. Not sure it was necessary but I am very happy with this set up.

That's all I use on .22's when I 'scope them.

That is all I've ever mounted on a .22 and have not had any problems with accuracy.

Yesterday I was shooting a Ruger 10/22 suppressed that was topped with an old Weaver 4X steel tube scope - worked just dandy as long as I did my part. Wasn't shooting worth beans yesterday -but sure had fun anyway. I used a Simmons 3X9 on MY 10/22 when it was scoped. Worked dandy as far as I could tell.
