Today's "I've got a place in the country" mystery.
What my 12 inch steel target and stand looked like at least up until 2 weekends ago. Photo taken 12/29/2011. Two weeks ago it was still beside the wooden target stand, just laying on it's side.

All that I found of it today, 50 yards away from the still standing and apparently unmolested wooden stand. No tire tracks were around it.

Today's "I've got a place in the country" mystery.
I'm guessing person or persons unknown out to just damage your range and the target is still in the area or someone who saw a dollar or two in scrap metal and drug it off to a vehicle to steal it.
The worst part (other than some thief taking your property off of your property) is that if your gong was AR500 or such, they will get the same scrap price as mild steel and the replacement cost is nowhere the same.
Way past when this is likely to do any good, but ask the local scrap yard if they have seen it.
Yeah, I thought about that, but
it was behind a locked gate, 1/2 mile off the nearest road (we're on a gravel road), and was in an open field completely hidden from anywhere outside that field by woods or heavy treelines. The last time an unsuppressed gun was fired on it was about 4 months ago in the cooler weather. And our neighbors are good and trusted friends and not only would not do it, they would consider it great sport in dealing with some one who might. Billy, our bull dozier driving, Vietnam era Marine Sniper with 19 kills and flashbacks neighbor, drug a road hunter out of his driver side window and beat the soup out of him about 15 years ago. The game warden asked him why he did it and that all he had to do was call the game warden, he replied "Yeah I know, but I wanted to, he spot lighted my house".
Shooting on your own place is looked upon pretty much like owning a pickup and knowing where to get good enchaladas out there. If you don't "you just ain't from here ere ya boy". Our neighbors on CR 218 are trusted friends and a real hoot to be around.
There is a mature bull and a two year old "coming up" bull, both gentle as can be with us. But the cows are coming into season and I'm now betting that there was a herd bull testing contest and it got run over in the process. I have seen our original 2200 pound bull run at a 2400 pound fence jumper bull, get his head under his rib cage and throw him about 10 feet. About 5 years ago a yearling bull got his neck broken taking on the much larger king in one of those on our place.
Still it's a mystery. I'll probably find the top part of the target eventually. Maybe in the woods. But yesterday was over 100 degrees and I just drove the field looking for it in the truck.

I've came to the conclusion that anything left outdoors is no longer safe from thieve's and dope heads.
