.25WCF Martini is in hand

and overall, I am pleased. It is set up as a sort of 'benchrest' rifle...I guess. Wide, flat bottom forearm, like VERY flat. Tasco 6-24x50 scope. I can sneak a cartridge in under the scope but it's tight. It came with a pile of brass (which I already have), dies (which I already have) and maybe 20 loaded rounds. Interesting in that they were loaded with a sharp, hollow point....also kind of pointing to benchrest/varmint shooting. It sports a 25" barrel with a recessed 'target crown'. I haven't peered down the bore yet nor have I shot it...the neighbors have some funny ideas.

The previous owner is a good friend of my brother. I asked Bro' Dan if he thought the ammo was to be trusted and if he'd share the load data. He used 75gr. Sierra's over what looks like (haven't checked) a sensible amount of H110. I'll probably pull it down anyway mostly because .25WCF's 'should have' flat nose, lead bullets, darn it.

The things I have read regarding scopes for varmints or targets leans towards 'it doesn't have to be wonderful glass' for the application as things are generally shot with lots of light. That said, I might be a bit of a snob as "Tasco" is a big negatory in my book. I will leave it as-is for now and see how it does.

The stocks are very pleasing in person. Seem to well inletted and fit. The finish has the right amount of 'luster' without being shiny.

Interesting to note, there are no markings on the action. I assume they were polished out in the build. The barrel has a name and something stamped just forward of the receiver. But it's too small for me to make out unaided. It looks like perhaps a name and location? I'll pull the forearm off in a day or so to see what's hiding under it--if anything.

That's about all for now. I am very much looking forward to seeing how it does. I think, considering the relative low power of the cartridge, I can get away with shooting the 100 yd. rams at Raton this June. :-D

The current line of thought in schuetzen and ASSRA is to chamber the 25-20 in a faster twist barrel, usually 1-10, then use cast bullets weighing anywhere from 100 to 120 grains. This would be used at 200 yards, which I’m sure you know.

There is enough powder capacity to hit velocities between 1200 and 1600 fps, so you have room to experiment with various speeds for your different cast bullets. I’ve seen both spitzer and round nose profiles used.

I sort of doubt your Martini is barreled in this fashion, but I would certainly determine the rate of twist just to be certain. Breech seating a long, skinny slug like that would be pretty difficult, due to both your scope height and the slightly peculiar manner in which the Martini accepts ammunition.

Thank you Tony. I did not know of any 'current' uses of the .25-20 and find that very interesting. I have had issues consistently measuring twist but I will take a look once it's in the shop for further inspection. And, yes Jim, I'll take pictures. :-D
