Nice gun, shoots good as well, congrads.

Sadly I own zero 45 Colts at present, do miss my blued Vaquero I used in CAS, 5 1/2" case colored frame with a great trigger, wished I had kept that one :-(

My eye sight has gotten so bad, never be able to see and use those sights, be a waste of money sadly.

My eyesight has gotten bad enough that I usually only shoot targets on the range early in the morning .. when the sun is coming up behind me and the sights and the targets are very clearly lit. No shadows or bright spots either side.

Even then, when looking through the sights very long things begin to fuzz. Sometimes I can close my right eye and shoot with my left eye til it fuzzes and then switch back the right eye. And sometimes even that does not help. -sigh-

Last time at the range I took a pair of those cheap walmart magnifiers and they helped for awhile. The sights were pretty clear and the target was fuzzy but I could hold center OK.

Been going back to practicing "point shooting" where basically all you see is the front sight and the target. At the Shootists Holiday we were shooting 8" steel gongs at 15 yards or so. I ran 30 or 40 rounds just point shooting and was able to hit the gong more than 90% of the time. Years ago I would never have missed it. It takes some practice to get the muscle memory in place.

To force myself to do it I put a piece of tape over the rear sight. Practice bringing the gun up and catching the front sight in peripheral vision and pulling the trigger at the correct spot. It's a fun way to run through a bunch of ammo and with practice can be fairly accurate.

It has been my experience with a couple of Italian Uberti's in .45 that one should NOT file/bend the front sight for a couple hundred rounds to REALLY get solid proof by one's own eyes where the pistol is constantly hitting after shooting it alot.

Bob

Great advice! (nt)

Bad gunsmithing......

by Gunner @, St Louis, Sunday, June 29, 2025, 17:16 (61 days ago) @ Bob Hatfield

I knew a guy who read too many articles about filing down the front sight and turning the barrel to get a SAA type handgun to hit point of aim. And in a rush to accomplish this he did it before really shooting the handgun enough to understand his shooting of said handgun. After filing 50-60 % off the front sight and tweaking the barrel left only to discover he was not holding the handgun firm and sighting correctly, afterwards he wrote a check to a gunsmith to have a new front sight installed.

I never felt comfortable enough to file my front sights down on my set of 45 colt Vaqueros, I just aimed a little high right to hit center of target. Worked well enough for me, even during my CAS shootin' days.

I have usually tried to encourage shooters

by JimT, Texas, Sunday, June 29, 2025, 17:33 (61 days ago) @ Gunner

to run at least 500 rounds through a new gun before doing anything to it. The Marlin Trapper .45 Colt Shootists Anniversary gun we got has about 400 rounds through it and all I have done to it is adjust the rear sight a bit. It's not totally where it should be but once we put a few more hundred through it we will work on the trigger a bit and sight it in properly with whatever load we settle on.

I have about 400 rounds through the Cimarron .45 and have decided not to touch the sights. I may take a little off the front sight some day. Probably not though. It is close to POA at 20 yards with the Colt loads and that's OK by me.
