Mouse Gun

Working around the property I usually carry a small pistol. Most every morning when I go out to check the chickens, the feed, the water, see how the critters are doing and checking the traps I carry this mouse gun.
So far I've killed 8 raccoons, 1 possum, 1 dog, numerous clay pigeons and a few rocks. My good friend Al Anderson has done about the best with his. That's a durn big mouse!

MCump told me a story once, and I hope I have it correct.
Guy he worked with, not an especially savvy outdoorsman, or marksman, stumbles into the middle of a bunch of feral pigs. He was mushrooming, maybe? The swine are displeased, and physically express this.
He has a Ruger Standard. Presumably 9+1.
In the next few seconds, he's fired 10 rounds, 5 piggies are dead or dying, and he's out of ammo. He carried no spare magazine.
The surviving pigs are discouraged, and break off the kerfuffle. He runs like Carl Lewis back to his vehicle, and gets the heck of Pigland.
Not a good story if you are a pig protecting your homeland from invasion, I suppose, but most humans would consider it a happy ending.
The .22 will do it.

It's always good to carry extra ammo. I used all 6 in the little Bearcat dispatching a raccoon awhile back. It was moving around, trying to get away from me. My first shot had rolled it over (head shot) but did not kill it .. just stunned it. I hit it with 4 out of the 6 and the last one was lights out. But I was sweating it 'cuz I had not brought any more ammo with me. That has changed!

I have a 22 clip of unknown pedigree for walking about with my 22 single actions. Rarely needed, but worth its weight in gold when it is.

I was heading for town with a Jeep load of folk one time, after I blew the barrel on the Ruger Old Army and before I picked up the Rossi 38 - so was relatively unarmed. Saw a rattler crossing the road just in front of us, and real close to a habitation. Typically I'll leave serpents alone, if they don't startle me, but not near human habitation. I stopped the Jeep and said, "Erasmo, loan me your pistol." He hemmed and hawed but I promised to replace his loads with some of my US sourced stash so he handed me his little 22. Can't remember if it was a Rossi or Taurus but he always carried it. I proceeded to miss 4 out of 5 shots from around 6 to 8 feet, the last shot grazing the side of the rattler's head and throwing it into contortions. I had to finish it off with a machete, not exactly a fun procedure with an upset and jumpy reptile. What I wouldn't have given for another load of ammo - and a better pistol! Several weeks later I saw him again, back out in his regular stomping grounds and asked to see his pistol again. From a rest at about the same distance I couldn't keep the shots on a knot on the side of a log, the knot being about the size of the rattler's head. The barrel was corroded inside from lots of carrying and sweating and not enough oil and maintenance! Many think I'm odd (not necessarily wrong there, I'll admit) but I REALLY don't like to head to the woods with less than a box of spare ammo. The only time you've got too much ammo is if you've got to swim and it's pulling you under!
