.44 Mag Carbine loads for Lyman 429421

Hi all.
A friend of mine has a pretty Henry carbine in .44 Magnum. He shoots a lot of factory ammo, and he'll hunt whitetails with it this season.
I was thinking of putting up some .44 Mag loads for it using the Lyman 429421 Keith bullet, but I wanted to get y'all's opinion on what's the best load to get both accuracy and velocity out of this plain-base bullet in a Henry carbine.
I figure it'll be something involving 4227 or 2400 or some such magnum powder, but I don't know how hard I should drive it for ultimate accuracy at velocities suitable for hunting.
Any advice you might have would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-AaronB
From a rifle you can easily reach 1600+fps

depending on barrel length, with a 250gr Keith. However, based on my experience, that plain base bullet is not going to be happy at that velocity unless it is harder than woodpecker lips.
This prompts the question about hunting with a non-expanding bullet. Some states consider hardcast to be the same as FMJ bullets and make no allowance for meplats. No idea how the possum cop would ascertain the hardness of your bullet to see if it is expanding or non-expanding. YMMV.
But it will surely make two holes in a deer.
Might be better to back the Keith down to handgun velocities for a more harmonious outcome.

I don't know about the henry but marlins and rossis often have feeding issues with that bullet unless either deep seated or loaded in special cases.

I agree with RayLee. I never had luck with the Keith style bullet feeding in my Rossi or Marlin. I did use other bullets out of molds by LBT, JDJ, LEI, and MP. I used 240grn and a load for rifles from the Lyman manual of 24 grns of 4227. That is a max load and would kick the snot out of me in a Rossi and was not much better in the Marlin. I have since backed off to 22 grns but The next batch is going to be using 10grns of Unique or its equivalent load of universal clays.

Will they feed? In magnum brass they are too long to feed from the magazine of both my Marlin 1894 and Browning 92. The only levergun that I know will feed Keith bullets in magnum brass is the 94 Winchester, although the early 336 44 magnums probably would too,
I have had better results with 2400 and H4227 and plain base bullets than H110. With jacketed 240gr I have got over 1800 FPS using H110 in a carbine.
With something like WW alloy I would think you would top out around 1400-1500 if you want minimal leading and best accuracy. I have been shooting a 245gr RNFP in magnum brass with 6.5gr of Red Dot in my leverguns lately. They are going about 1100 FPS.
Something like Unique or HS6 would get you in that 1400 FPS range out of a carbine, with much less blast.

Okay, after reading these replies I realized that I hadn't properly thought this project through. I am not going to bet on the Keith .44 bullet to feed through his Henry, so I probably ought to be looking at something gas-checked with an ogive to facilitate feeding.
Hmm. Now I have to buy a bullet mold! :D

I took a quick look on eBay and found a Lyman 429434 mold. This bullet at 220 grains looks like it might be the thing.
Anyone know this bullet?

This is the mold I went with. Mine is plain base but he can cut it for a gas check as well.

If I am not mistaken that is a 44-40 bullet. I I have had issues with some Lyman molds dropping undersized bullets so it might be a bit small for a 44 magnum carbine. Older marlins had fairly large bores not sure about the new ones and Henry’s. . I size mine to .432” for use in carbines and for most revolvers

FWIW, I've run Elmer's heavy .44 Special load through a 92 Trapper and gotten around 1430 fps. As noted already, the Lyman/Keith bullet won't feed through most lever actions in magnum brass but they run slick in Special brass.
