GUNNER - .45 ACP .. 230 gr. FP ... 6.0 gr. 231

by JimT, Texas, Thursday, October 03, 2024, 13:04 (12 days ago)

I went to the Range this morning to chronograph these loads. BUT .. I cannot get my old chronograph to work! I confess I have only used it once in the last 18 years so it has probably corroded away internally or something. I tried everything I could to try and get it to work but to no avail.

The loads seem accurate enough and feel like a good 800 + fps load going off. I fired some groups with them. And I kept my record intact by flinching a shot outside of a good group!

I have no lead 230 gr bullets, only Berry plated 230s, will load them for data. I got out my old 45 acp all in one load booklet, Speer shows 6.2 grs as max with a 230 TMJ while all the other show a range of 5.7 to 5.8 grs as max with a lead or jacketed bullet, color me surprised!

So your load is not as hot as I was thinking, my normal load for a lead or jacketed 230 gr is 4.8 grs of 231. Old data from 1998 shows 4.8gr 231 with a 230 gr LFP averaging 769 fps. SO now I am really interested in the load data now, this weekend weather looks good, I will get some loaded and tested.

I ran that bullet in a Sig 220 and a Kimber Compact for a number of years, mainly because neither of them liked my regular 45 loads with an H&G68 type bullet.

I never clocked it from the Kimber but at 6 grains Unique and 1.215" OAL the Sig (4.25" barrel) ran an average of 845.

I did once take it up to 6.5 gr Unique and it ran 970 fps from a 5.5" Blackhawk convertible - it also pierced primers more often than I liked. A magazine through the Sig averaged 882.

If that were a tomcat, your flyer would have made him an it.
