Cleaning up my 1911

My carry gun is an ATI 1911 that was given to me by a good friend. The gun is accurate and reliable, but I have long been irritated by the lettering and markings on the slide. So after working on the 1851 Navy I decided to do the 1911.

Boy! Easy working surface .. long and flat ... BUT man is that slide made of hard steel! I worked several hours just on one side! But it has come out pretty well.

the rear markings were tougher to do than the ones further forward, due to the short distance you have to file there. I like the results, though.

My first one was a WWI 1911 that I bought when I was about 15. Someone had chrome-plated it and the chrome was peeling in places. The barrel was worn and it wasn't real accurate but I loved that old gun.

Dad had me sit down on the ground, resting my back against the front tire on the car. He loaded a case with 3 or 3.5 gr. of Bullseye, shoved a .456" round ball onto the mouth of the case and loaded it in the gun.

I was shooting 25 yards. The loads did not move the slide. I fired 5 shots, single loading the round ball loads. This is the target. I still have it.

And your first lesson is Filipino made 1911's are good guns but the slides are very hard, most gunsmiths will not work on them do this because the slide eats expensive mill bits.

The Rock Island guns are pretty nice ... the ones I have looked at. I put a Rock Island slide stop in my Ruger SR1911. Boy that thing was hard. To fit it I had to use a stone because the file would just skate on it. The Slide stop was made in Israel by the way.

They are good guns for the price, I have a RIA in 9mm, fun gun to shoot, son in law has one in 45 acp also.

I currently have three that I know of. One cheapie .45. Got awhile back that shoots way better than I think it should! One Cimarron WWI 1911 .45 that I got myself as a 45th birthday present and antiqued a bit. It’s not spectacular but does ok. And a ‘tactical’ model in 9mm. O my shot it a bit but it seems to do very well. A 9mm steel 1911 is a very pleasant shooting auto!

It was heavy enough that it did not recoil and you could do accurate rapid fire with it. I traded it off for 2 1st generation SAA's (plus $300) and felt like I got a good deal. The 9mm is not a favorite cartridge of mine. :-P
