On the Range with a 1911

Last week I spent some time on the range with my carry 1911. It's a Filipino-built gun that was a present to me from a close friend when I moved back the States after Twyla passed. I have been carrying and shooting it now for 6 years.

The ivory grips were a gift from Paul Persinger. He said I shouldn't be carrying a 1911 without ivory on it. I told him it was like putting a $40 saddle on a $20 horse.

At the range I spread a tarp to catch my empties. When I am done shooting I roll it up, fold it so it stays shut. At home I just pour them into a bucket and then into the case cleaner. Keeps my work load to a minimum.

This time at the Range I was just running through some drills .. shooting at unmarked paper plates at 15 yards. I had 3 plated tacked up. I would pull the gun and put a shot on each plate ... not trying for speed but just for muscle memory .. proper grip .. catching the front sight. I found years ago you don't have to practice for speed. Practice for consistency. When you get an adrenaline rush you will get fast without trying. If you have practiced the basics you will do it right.

I also practiced putting multiple shots on single and multiple targets. Nothing fancy. Just trying to hold the gun right.

Then I shot a few groups at 15 yards. The load is a Lyman 225 gr. cast RN sized .452" and lubed with Paco's Apache Blue over 4.0 gr. Bullseye. Seems fairly accurate if I do my part.

The old gun has been reliable and works well. It does what it is supposed to do and that's all I need.

THE FILIPINOS DO KNOW HOW TO MAKE 19911s. THEY ARE THE LARGEST PRODUCER OF BROWNINGS GREAT .45 IN THE WORLD.

Looks good!

I bought one of those a few years back. It was used and I don’t know if the previous owner had slicked it up or not, but it ha s a good trigger and has been very accurate for me. I’m not as good of a shooter as you are, but mine does well enough for me. Funny thing is, mine has a set of giraffe bone stocks on it from Scott Kolar.

I liked it enough that last fall when I turned 45, I decided a 45 of some sort was a fitting present and my local gun shop had a Cimarron WWI styled 1911, also made by RIA and I bought it too!
I haven’t shot it near as much as the first one but it seems to be a good one too.

Then, a couple weeks ago, an RIA in 9mm came up for sale locally at a good price with a bunch of ammo, so I picked it up as well. It seems to hit low, but is a very sweet shooter. I’ve never had a 9mm 1911 before and it’s about like shooting a 22 out of the full sized steel frame.

They are real pleasant. I had a Commander in 9mm. That was when I discovered why most people like the 9mm. It's louder than the .45 ACP but has no recoil to speak of. The noise makes them think they have a powerful pistol!

:-D :-) ;-) :-P

Ha ha!

Well, I guess I kind of mis spoke. I do have an old (30’s era) Llama in 9mm largo. I haven’t shot it in years and when I did, it was sparking my due to ammo availability. It’s slide is marked 9mm/38, and I have shot some handloads using .38 Super Brass and. .38 acp level hand loads. I’m glad to have this new one because I can shoot it more without worry, other than using up my small pistol primers! I’m wanting to get my 14 year old to the range worh it. He likes my .45’s but the recoil is a little heavy for him so I’m hoping he’ll like this one more!
