Reading the various histories the series was fairly accurate
with some consideration given to compacting the time line a bit and certain language. I don't think the various guns were that far off but photos show the use of a number of S&W as well as Colts but no known brass-framed Colt copies. It appears that what was at hand was what was used in both the movie and real-life although exactly which doesn't match up. I thought it was pretty good. Bob Hatfield had some thoughts he posted on Leverguns. There are other family members with memories of oral accounts that vary a bit from the written histories as well as the series. I don't think you're going to avoid that.
