10mm options

by MS @, Southern Michigan, Sunday, January 27, 2019, 07:57 (2064 days ago)

I've had a Smith 1006 for about 8 years now.
I dearly love the 10mm caliber, but there are a few things about the 1006 that have me thinking of peddling it and buying a different 10mm pistol.

The biggest problem is just that, it's big. The factory grip with curved backstrap makes it just a little too big for my short fingers for best comfort and control.

Plus the fact that I'm going to put a reflex sight on it in order to get satisfying accuracy out of it.
I'd rather not have an RMR cut put in the slide of this discontinued model of Smith.

Sooo, Which other 10mm should I look for? A 1911 would work, but the EAA Witness is an interesting looking piece.

The Ruger SR1911 Target looks like a very nice option, especially for the street price of $750 or so.

Any experiences with any of the 10mm's available at this time would be appreciated.

be my choice. Ask Dave Beeman about his 10mm Ruger. It had some issues, which Ruger corrected.
Ruger's 10 GP100 is really cool. Sending it to Bobby Tyler to get the chamber's reamed to 10mm Magnum, gives a whole new level of performance. Jeff Quinn wrote about that on Gunblast.com. One of my employees had that done to HIS 10mm GP...

G40, a buddy has one, and a G20. To be honest, Glocks and I don't get along very well. For some reason probably due to grip angle, they all shoot high in faster strings of fire or if I'm in a hurry getting a sight picture. I'll pass rather than re-learn.
There are a couple of other guns that do the same sort of thing.

The only centerfire semi auto I owned for a long time was a Colt's Combat Commander.
There were lots of revolvers but only the one semi.
That's my "home base" for pistols and I think that's where I want to go back to for this general duty sidearm.

Yep, when I getanother 10mm it will be a 5 or 6Inch

10mm options...Springfield XDm10

by Otony, Sunday, January 27, 2019, 10:06 (2064 days ago) @ MS

We've sold several here in the shop. Two versions available, one with fixed sights, another with adjustable sights and a longer barrel /slide.

I quite like how if feels in the hand, as it fits ME a great deal better than a 10mm Glock, ymmv. Having said that, I've not shot one...yet.

Carries 15 rounds in the magazine, so no slouch in that department.

All my previous experience with the cartridge has been in 1911s, both 5" and 6" barreled versions. While another 1911 would be my preference, i have to say rhat the Springfield has my attention.

Right now one of the Dan Wesson 10mms like the Razorback are near the top of my list. A RMR cut would be a possibility as well.

The Ruger has a reputation for cracking the lug on the bottom of the barrel. Dave’s did and if you look on the ruger forum there are several mentions of others. Ruger fixes them but it doesn’t instill a lot of confidence. It will be a while before I am able to buy so I might revisit the ruger then.

10 MM is very dear to me. Now no one has made a 10mm on the 1911 platform from scratch. They are all adapted from a 45 acp platform. Glock Built a 10mm and used that platform to make a 45acp . I think bang foe bucks the Glock 40 with the reflex sight is the nuts. But short fingers and Glocks don't mix. I think Tang folio made a hunter long slide 10 mm but the price tag is HIGH! I think you would best be served with the 1911 platform so Ruger or Dan Wesson is what I would look for and a 6" would be my choice.

The "Pretty Turd"

I did something I knew I shouldn't do. I bought a Para. Talk inside and outside Para USA was they'd improved quality and customer service. I still didn't trust them and knew I shouldn't buy one. Remington acquired Para and I thought if I were going to gamble, do it now before Remington made them worse. I knew I shouldn't do it. But I did anyway.

Cheap MIM parts. I didn't care all that much, I have a habit of eventually changing everything inside a 1911 anyway.
Slide to frame fit was beautiful, tight. No movement at all. Fit and finish were superb. I was impressed.
But... the barrel lockup wasn't great. Pressure on the barrel hood showed downward movement. It turned out it was the least accurate 1911 I've ever shot and that includes some really loose Officer's ACP's. I tried a tight custom bushing, tried a "group gripper", it didn't help. In 400-450 rounds the very tight gun turned into a rattle trap. I drove 6 hours to a Remington warrenty shop and they didn't think there was anything wrong with it. (because they hadn't seen the dramatic change in before and after.) They told me it was unlikely the factory would do anything for me. So I took it home and sold it with full disclosure. Paid pert near $1200 if not more. Sold it for half that.

I've come to refer to it as the pretty turd.

With the hundreds of 1911 dot sight mounts available it seems to me that it is not absolutely mandatory to cut the slide.

Slide cuts vs. Novak mount

by MS @, Southern Michigan, Tuesday, January 29, 2019, 10:20 (2062 days ago) @ E Sisk

Trijicon makes a Novak cut mount for the RMR for $85-$90. There are a lot of like mounts for half that or less, but I don't know if the RMR fits on any of them.
Since I have a couple of RMR's a 1 minute dot and a 3-1/2 minute dot, and just the M&P CORE 9, there's a spare here.

IIRC a deep RMR cut on a 1911 is $275 ish?

The Novak cut mount would allow one to put it on an unmodified gun, but they also sit a good bit higher, making co-witness sights a pretty tough find.

Choices choices.

Howdy, I am interested in getting a S&W 1006, have been for years just never pulled the trigger on buying one. I have owned a 4006, fortyS&W since the very early 90's. Still my carry gun of choice. When I got mine it was standard issue for State Troopers here in Alaska. Local Police Chief Jim used to call me and let me know right after police shoots so I could gather brass at there range. I am still shooting some of there free brass. Funds are very tight at this time but would love a chance at first refusal of your weapon should you decide to sell. Sorry for the thread drift, just had to put this out there. Love those smiths. Thanks Dennis

Dennis, let me know if you get a couple of emails from the Webservant address. Yahoo is bouncing emails to you from the forum, refusing to deliver. Don't know if they'll bounce from my address yet or not. We'll see. You'll need to respond to the person who contacted you, not just click "Reply" or I'll get it (although I"d be happy to pass it on if need be).
