Snow Seal and leather work gloves?

by Otony, Sunday, November 18, 2018, 17:55 (2134 days ago)

Have any of you ever used Snow Seal to "moisturize" leather work gloves? I've got a couple of pairs of goatskin work gloves that have gotten wet while working here on the homestead and are no longer supple. They are hard and stiff, which is not what I need.

I notice that after I wear 'em for a half hour or so they do loosen up somewhat, so I wonder if adding grease or oil in some fashion will help restore the softness.

I also have some leather treatment stuff that Rob has recommended in the past. I think it is Called Lexol, or something along those lines. Would that be a better bet?

I’ve used olive oil on baseball gloves and it worked very well.

Never thought about that, but I’m willing to bet that is what my Dad would have done. He was born in Sicily and came here in 1947. Probably would have been his go-to for a lot of other things, lol!

Snow Seal and leather work gloves?

Lexol has been around for many years and is a favorite for leather of all kinds. Snow Seal is also a leather dressing and has been around for a number of years. Snow Seal is a wax dressing and makes leather quite waterproof for some period of time. They are not the same product and not for the same use. I have used Snow Seal and it does a good job.

Don't use anything that is petroleum based on leather.

Okay, that makes sense, and confirms what Charles made me think about.

Would it be okay to treat them with both? Lexol first, the Snow Seal? I have both products here already....

I use Sno Seal on boots, holsters and the like which do not have to be supple, not so sure how it would work on gloves, particularly if it was cold. Would imagine something like Lexol would work just fine, may have to be applied each time they got wet though.

Otony, I believe I would use Lexol on gloves. Snow Seal is waxy and would make them stiff. I treated a roughout leather cowboy hat years ago with Snow Seal to make it waterproof. It is sure enough waterproof and hard enough to use as a safety helmet.

Hah! That settles that.....

I don’t need gloves that are stiff, just the opposite.

Lexol it is. For the record, I’ve only ever used Snow Seal on boots, and one pair of winter Mocs back when I was still doing living history re-enactments.

Thanks to all!
