Knives

Hunting season is closing in quickly. Today I checked my knives. The first 2 are my favorites. The Boker I've had since the 80s. I've carried it as a work knife day by day. It's done a few deer & several fish. The yellow handle Case has been carried a bunch also. I purchased it coming through Missouri. It's done a few deer, squirrel & rabbit. They are both shaving sharp & ready to work.

The next 2 knives came from NJ. The top one is a gift from uncowboy & a treasured possession. The bottom is one he sold me for Barbara.

This knife was also a gift from a friend. I've used it some but not like the favorites.

Nice knives. I've never done a deer with a folder of any kind. I DO have an old Utica Sportsman that belonged to Rev. Love (deceased) of the Presbyterian Church in Joplin, MO. It was given to me by his daughters as a basket case when they moved their Mom's stuff out of the old family home. It's done countless goats, a deer or two, misc other game and fish galore as well. There's something about the older blades that the new ones just can't match.

I rarely need to use a knife on a game animal. Way back in college I went hunting with my roommate who had been a boy scout. He brought along his small backpack and gear. Turned out his hunting knife was far too dull to do anything so we processed the deer down to ice chest size with my small folding knife.

I'm in the same boat with Tom. Those ole tried & true designs always get my attention first.
I guess, the truth be told I'm knife poor. Schrade-Waldens, Case, Boker, Cold Steel...etc.
I've always said, 90% of the pocket knives in America don't get 'used' up, they get abused to death. Screw driver, can opener, small pry bar..etc. I recall one early December years ago passing through the sporting goods section of Wally World. A lady was studying the knives and for whatever reason, asked me what a good one was. She said her husband just can't keep one because he's always tearing them up. I asked her if he used them as screw drivers, can opener's, small pry bar..etc? Yes she said. I eased her over to the multi-tool section and told her 'start here', they've all got a knife blade in them. She gave me a huge smile and a thank you, turned and asked the clerk to please show her a few of them. Hope that fella got the message.

When I worked as a mechanic, long before multitools were popular, I carried an old folder handed down from my father. He had broken off the tip of the main blade so I ground it square and smooth and used it as a screwdriver, the edge was still useful for cutting belts and hoses and stripping wire. One of the other blades I kept sharp for scraping gaskets. I've since thought how great it would have been to have a basic multitool back then.

Love the replies. I'm a knife guy in that I use one often for this & that. I have several but most all are work knives except for a few Boker 1011 patterns like the one pictured which I've collected.

I don't understand how folks can get along without one. Flying is torture for me, have leave even the nail clippers out of one's pocket due to the idiocy of "safety" nazis. Usually have two in my pocket for a total of four blades. One Puma stockman and a single blade Kershaw. A canadian friend doesn't get why anyone would carry a knife, especially at school. I told her that they're useful for many things, from opening an envelop to cutting string, peeling fruit, etc, etc, etc. She said "When we needed to open an envelop we used scissors." She just doesn't understand the beauty of having the solution right there in your pocket and not having to go look for something to get the job done.

...and a man can never have enough. Let's just say that I was SOOOOOO sure that I would have at least several villages full of grandkids!
I always believe in being prepared.
A Guatemalan lady at church told me a while back , "You always have a knife, don't you!" Yes, she told me, didn't ask me. She was just stating a fact, after she needed to borrow it.
Dad had an old USN "small Bowie" Ka-Bar in a homemade sheath that his f-i-l had found many, many years ago while hunting, and the gifted to my dad.
HOWEVER, Dad chose to field-dress deer with a small Case Trapper that was a gift from my mom when they first married, or with an old Western Stockman. I have both of those blades, still.
Traditions die hard.

I was gifted my grandpa's old stockman, it's a Boker, IIRC. It'd be neat to know how many calves it's castrated, muskrats, coons and such that it's skinned, trout it's cleaned and apples and other fruit and food it has sliced, peeled, etc. When I get it out it speaks to me of a good man who did his best to raise his family with solid values. And that's why I carry a stockman, albeit by Puma instead of Boker as that is what I've got. The old knife gets out for fits of nostalgia...
