It also depends on if the user wants single action or double action, and what ammunition they use. The S&W action design is such that the hammer is farther back in single action than double action and thus the double action hammer strike has less energy. I've seen misfires with CCI primers. I asked a gunsmith friend about it, a guy who used to build revolvers for PPC, and he said that my observations were common. He said if a person was doing a lot of double action work they should use primers other than CCI.

Regarding hammer mass- I've noticed that something like a KelTec has what appears to be a very lightweight hammer and it seems to still work.
