I would love to have a pallet of M855a1 out in the barn for shooting around the farm.

It is a new generation of uber high performance ammunition that is kicking the envelope of effectiveness up more than a notch. Another example is the XM2010 .300 Win Mag round that extends the effective range from 800 to over 1200 meters.

The big variable here is the greatly increased chamber pressure of this new ammunition as well as new bullet technology. Generally it is accepted that the upper limit of brass cased small arms ammo is around 50,000 psi while this new stuff runs around 63,000-65,000 psi. Thats a big difference.

Word is the 5.56mm M855a1 will not only out penetrate M80 7.62mm on cold rolled steel armor plate and is also very close to instant death on finely boned thin skinned creatures under 250 lbs even out of SBRs.

Weapons do wear out faster...
