Picked up a pre-safety Marlin 336 today, with my favored....

....straight grip stock. I have a couple of Marlins set up this way, an XLR that I returned to Marlin for a straight grip conversion, plus an 18" barreled Texan 336T. Oh, and a 336TK that I had rebarreled to .25-35 a few years back.

This one has the 20" barrel, which I tend to prefer over shorter tubes. The walnut stocks are uncheckered, and in great shape. If you turn the receiver just so, a sprinkling of freckles show up. Not a real detraction for me, and I believe it will come off with some elbow grease, oil, and steel wool.

Not sure what it is about straight grip Marlins, but those handy little rifles are undoubtedly my all time favorites. Can't imagine not having one around.....

.30-30, the classic lever cartridge....

......but years ago I had a straight grip .35 that I traded for, um, something?

Wish I had it back, but I do have a Marlin 1895 from the initial reintroduction with a straight grip, 1/2 magazine, and 22ā€ barrel. Quite a difference between the two cartridges, .35 and .45, but Iā€™m satisfied.

Has it. Looks like coarse steel wool but will take off rust without harming the bluing. Great stuff!
