Pump Shootgun Speed

Watching outdoor channel show on Remington History. Remington historian was talking about the 870. I knew he was going to say it but still could not believe it when he did. He repeated the myth that with enough practice an 870 is faster than a semi-auto. Sorry, but No Way, No How, is it possible to outrun a semi-auto with a pump.

Yeah..... no.

Trouble shooting a gun I'd worked on. Not even "warmed up"

So my faster times with my 870 on pins vs my 1100

That's about pacing, recoil and you.

First time I shot pins fast, we had a 1911, a S&W 586 and a Webley in 38S&W (with it's 75lb trigger pull). And now matter what, my runs with the Webley were faster and more accurate. Which makes absolutely no sense.

I know that wouldn't be the case today though. :-D

PROPER Patrice and technique with any one gun will make you faster with what ever one you figure out the best. You can over run an auto causing misses when a pump slows you down just enough to get center hits.

YEP!

Tom Knapp seemed to be faster with an auto

I've seen him in numerous videos and he hit more hand-thrown targets with an auto than a pump.

When I used to hang around a trap range there was the occasional person that did well at doubles with a pump but most people didn't try.

Fast hits depend somewhat on the gun. I once had three doves dead in the air using a beat-up but very slick old Ithaca 37, but have never been able to even come close with anything else, including an old and equally slick Model 12.

870? Forget it. 'Way too slow.

I've talked with my dad about the exhibitions of Tom Knap. My dad has been interested in shotgunning all his life- bird hunting and shooting trap. He said he knew someone many years ago that could toss 7 clays in the air and break them with his Winchester model 12, the same thing that Tom Knap has done a lot of in more recent years. Apparently the number 7 became the standard with a pump shotgun because that is how many shells the standard Model 12 would hold. I believe Tom Knap was doing it with a Benelli Nova. I wondered how much different the individual shotgun brand would make.
