Glocks, S&W M&Ps, XDs etc are need a holster to be safe with a round in the chamber. The "Safety" is on the trigger, like putting the break on top of the gas peddle.

I have also read from a couple of gunwriters who are former LEOs that one way to tell the good guys from bad is the good guys use a holster. I would never consider carrying a gun without one (well maybe a snubby 38 in the back pocket if I went to see what the dog was pitching a fit about).
