That was my first thought. The M28 Highway Patrolman would be cheaper.
That M27 would be a lot cheaper :). NT

The Marines haven't bought the drums; they've been having the designated automatic rifleman carry a big stack of 30-rounders.
Yep but one article said they were still looking at 50 to 90

Form factor. Even the D60 would be awkward to carry a bunch of.
Still, if the gun is lighter, they will have an easier time

in the beginning of 83, our "Automatic rifleman" were the guys with 7 30 rounders. the rest of hus had 7 20 rounders. By the end of the year, we all had 30 rounders and carried as many as we could. and we have one M60 for every 3 to 4 men, having our own M151A1 Gun jeeps... No Assistant gunners, spare barrels got assigned to random others...along with M203s...

I thought everyone already knew of the change from "Green tip" to lead free m855a1 ammunition.
It out penetrates M80 7.62mm on steel plate and AARs indicate that even in short barreled carbines is an excellent performer equal to 7.62mm in the ability to make things stop moving real fast.
In addition, it is match grade accuracy round and is spec'd to hold 8" at 600 yards out of a service rifle. There has never been a mil spec service round that shoots that straight.
This is a revolutionary and evolutionary development in 5.56mm ammunition and is probably as good as the 5.56mm will ever get or needs to get.
The only downside to the m855a1 is that it operates at very high pressure and causes increased wear to the weapons. Big deal. Barrels and bolts are cheap.
I am around Army and USMC Infantry officers everyday and the general position is that the M4 is fine and the m855a1 is spectacular and those that complain about the m16/5.56mm the loudest just don't know what they are talking about.
Cheers
That would be why the Marines are looking at replacing them.

A good objective review of the M855 vs A1 variant can be found at-
https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2014/5/21/testing-the-army-s-m855a1-standard-...
Telling for me is the statement "A Special Operations Command test saw cracks appear on locking lugs and bolts at the cam pin holes on average at 6,000 rounds, but with as few as 3,000 rounds of “intense” full-automatic firing. The solution may be to find a means to count the number of rounds a rifle has fired."
Barrels and bolts can be replaced; but breakdowns will occur in combat, at those low round counts.
As most of us have known forever, it's counter-productive to overload a small cartridge trying to make it into a big one.
That, and the Army has also...

Had to redesign the magazine to try to make it feed reliably.
Sounds like a problem in search of a solution.

It' is like driving a 2 L supercharged car. You have to drive everywhere at higher RPMs to produce the power. I would much rather drive something with a big block and gobs of low end torque.
Ain't no replacement for displacement.

loaded with Federal Mk 319 SOST. Anything you do to make 5.56 deadlier works even better with bigger calibers.
Exactly.

I can't ever recall thinking this thing needs less power. Even when flying a lightly loaded Lear 45 to get checked out. Those things are hot rods and I was kind of like meh about it. I really thought it could have use more.
