I have a pair of 1x4 Meoptas that showed me that, like a red dot on 1 and a regular scope on 4. (forget about the 1x6 and 1x8's other companies have)

Love that glass, but there's one thing I can't do with them that I can with the scout, and that's wrap my hand around the action to carry it.

With an opening statement like that, you'll be soon writing articles about how the .45 is a waste of time and the AR is more reliable than an AK!!

given this group is pretty disposed to liking old school things, I imagine no one will make fun of me that I still like and will use a scout rifle, if for no other reason than nostalgia and participating in an old way to get the job done. Much like I still carry and use a .44 Special or .38/44 and think of the time when Keith did the same and it was cutting edge. Or that Skeeter liked it, just because. :)

Or a Winchester 94 in .30-30, etc., ad nauseum.

They make a nice light hunting rifle. For the serious social purposes that Colonel Cooper envisioned them for, they are really only useful for a narrow set of circumstances. There are a number of self-loading 7.62 rifles that can be made to shoot very well with decent optics and a good trigger. For most conditions involving encounters with armed humans, one of those would be a much better choice.
