Anyone shooting .38-55 with blackpowder?

I am about to begin loading up a cartridge of very similar proportions for a rifle not proofed for nitro. 'Net research seems to trend towards 3F and standard large rifle primers although there are some using 2F and some using standard large pistol and combinations thereof. Where would you recommend to start?

I have Ox Yoke Wonder Wads. Will I still need a card (or two)?

I know that my rifle will eventually tell me what works and what doesn't but I would prefer to avoid making any seriously amateur mistakes.
