First attempt at a custom built AR

by StoneWolf, Tuesday, October 18, 2016, 08:15 (2896 days ago)

Black rifles arent really my thing but o do love to build so figured I'd try my hand at custom building an AR. Used a Multi-cal lower from Anderson and the upper is from Palmetto along with the barrel. Honestly didnt realise how simple they are to build. Decided to go with walnut accessories to give it more of a hunting rifle look as well.

Sure looks different with the walnut. Congrats.

Dude, that is slick! Nor am I a fan of the AR platform, but that one at least LOOKS nice.

Have you shot it yet? If not, bring it up and we'll see if it shoots as good as it looks.

Where did the walnut come from?

Also not an AR guy, why is it that so many AR scopes are mounted way up yonder? Curious to me as I usually try and mount scopes on traditional rifles as low as they will go. Thanks!

Probably because of the high front sight ?

?

Please note...

How high the comb of the stock is in relation to the barrel.

It is not possible to look through the telescope if it is mounted in low rings when you are maintaining a proper cheek weld.

Therefore the high rings.

They also allow the optical sight to co-witness with the irons.

Cheers,

Byron

consider the standard carry handle model

The height of the standard rear aperture sight above the bore centerline is just high enough to fit everybody, even if it is maybe 1/10" too high for some people.

If you take a standard AR and mount an optic sight on top of the carry handle, it will be too high for precision shooting because your cheek will be too far above the buttstock. If you take a standard flattop rifle and put normal scope mounts on it, you can't get your face low enough to see through the sights. Most people need the center of the scope about 1.4" above the top of the rail in order to see though it. I'm going to guess that the scope in the photo is too high for a good cheek reference fit on the buttstock. Even with a standard front sight you can still put the scope down low and see around the front sight.

Yes, it really doesnt block the image like you might think

:-)

The barrel is pretty low in relation to the stock comb

Reduces muzzle climb; you will see that design feature replicated in a variety of other military autoloaders that have come along in more recent years.

The walnut is from a outfit from south dakota woodforar.com

But i got it through a vendor at the gun show here that i bought parts from. I thought the high scope was weird but those are the rings that were suggested, was going to try it out but figured I would be swapping it to lower mounts. Still cant decide if i want to go open sights or scope honestly.

Thank you. Looks good.

The comment about scope rings wasn't intended as criticism but more as trying to understand the arrangement. After Byron's comment, I had a think on it. The butt stock contains the buffer tube which, of course, is concentric to the bolt and thus in line with the bore. This puts it higher than standard rifles which, as mcassill notes, reduces muzzle climb and necessitates a higher ring set. So it must just come down to my perceptions, which I freely admit are slanted toward traditional bolt actions.

I suppose I should just add one to The Pile, play with it and then I'd know and quit asking inane questions. ;-)

Add one to the pile.

But look out. They multiply. I had a very well used M-16A1 in ROTC and wasn't terribly impressed. Never thought about the Ars for a long time.

A local deputy in the midst of a divorce came to my office in early '02 needing money and wanted to sell me his personally owned patrol rifle, a Clinton era Bushmaster carbine (fixed carry handle, no flash hider). I bought it to help him out and promptly threw it in the back of the safe where it was forgotten until 2009. A friend was calling coyotes and wanted me to go along. He used an AR-15 and suggested I scope mine and use it. I did and even with the scope on the carry handle it made a decent calling rig allowing fast multiple shots when several 'yotes came in.

The next spring I ordered a Rock River Coyote rifle upper and Timney trigger and discovered how accurate these things can really be. Between my boys and I we now have 5 or 6 ARs of various iterations in the house. We do a lot of coyote calling with them and love them for that purpose.

I like the brown and am glad to see you went with a longer barrel. Those close by when you are shooting will too.
The high mounts get your sight plane over that front sight. You may want to look into one of the carrying handle rear sights with a quick detachable sight through scope mount with it. Or you can put on a low gas block and go with MUCH lower scope mount
Being old hand I go with the full sights with a scope mount.

You gonna to feed it some game bullets in December?

I use a piece of slotted pool noodle to give me a comb high enough for a decent cheek weld with a high scope mount like one gets when the scope has to be high enough to clear the front sight.

Gotta find a piece of 1 1/2 - - 2" gray pipe insulation instead of the bright blue pool noodle though.

I used gray pipe insulation over PVC pipe to make

Feels comfortable as is for me, did think

About switching out the gas block/front sight for a lower one. It came with that one free when I bought the barrel and line, so just for the sake of finishing it before deer camp I threw it on. I have a second lower can't decide if I want to make a 300 AAC pistol or a carbine. With both lowers being multi caliber I'm looking at building a 7.62 upper as well.

may depend on your scope and your position

by bj @, Friday, October 21, 2016, 22:52 (2893 days ago) @ StoneWolf

Off of a bench rest with a high magnification scope it may be hard to keep your eye in the right position behind the scope eyepiece.
