My default choice would be the Williams FP, then a STEEL

Lyman or Redfield and then the XS. I would want the range of adjustment the older receiver sights have. That's me. The XS is a solid sight.

I put a Williams FP on mine and am happy with it
I tried a Skinner peep replacing the factory open rear sight, but that didn't help the problem of a very short sight radius, so I went with a Williams receiver sight. I'm very happy with it...

didn't use know sights... (One of my favorite shows as a kid, my first cowboy hat was just like Mark's) These are just round steel front and a poor interpretation of semi buck horns shiny blue steel they don't present a good sight picture for me...years ago a friend had the same carbine, a trapper , in 44 mag... I had an 8 3/8s 629 with white outline and red ramp fronts... (No my favorite set up) We were both surprised that 100 pace and beyond shots were easier with the S&W. Superior irons and half the barrel length...

d&Td by the factory for a rear peep, but , that's what gunsmiths are for... It does have the angle eject mount holes, but I won't scope it...

The XS and Skinner mount into those rear holes on top of the receiver for a scope base. Williams has a 5 D or FP that uses those holes as well.
My AE trapper 45 colt currently has XS sights, and my home made 30-30 trapper is wearing a steel Redfield. It is really too big for the rifle and am looking to replace it with something smaller down the road. The XS really isn't my favorite sight I have it on a few rifles and don't do my best work with them. I think it is more a function of the white line front than anything else.
Personally I like a serrated black front post with a mid size apreature. It is the best of both worlds for me. skinner makes a nice front sight that resembles a Clements when looking at it,

I have tried it and the smooth. Face reflects too much light. Nothing to my eyes comes close to a post front cut 75-80 degrees with serrations.

I think can be done, but since someone makes them already it would probably be easier to just buy a new one for a few dollars.
My Bowen 500 has the white line sights and while they are great for lower light I have never been able to shoot my best with them. I talked to Alan about milling down the face of th eblade and serriating it, but never had it done.

Thread files will cut serrations pretty quickly. You just need to pick a pitch and slowly cut straight across the sight face keeping repeated cuts in the same grooves. Maybe practice on the edge of a piece of scrap would be useful.

I only selected this as an example. In fact, I didn't even note the thread pitch so I couldn't say if it was too fine or too coarse.

That is a great idea. I bought a file for serrating years ago but it is too fine for what I wanted. I need to pick up something more suitable.

I am thinking it is a 40 LPI. I got it from Midway or Brownells at least 10 years ago. My biggest issue is it doesn't cut the serrations deep enough to be effective. I have attempted to cut the notches a little deeper with a different file but that didn't work for me.
I really think a 30 or Mayberry even a 20 would be better for a front sight. My Baer has what is probably a 20 LPI from the sight. It is very aggressive but sure is visible. .

I nearly ordered a 50 but thought the better of it. Mine will be used primarily for handgun sights unless the Missus wants the front sight done on her 16" Golden Boy.
Swiss Grobet #0 serrating file, 30 LPI works for me.
You still need to cut them to depth to point up.

Just a little fussy to adjust but rock-solid when done. Miss Melodie used it to great effect in 2015 to end the career of the "were-pig".

I did end up with a taller front with an 'ivory' bead and also opted for the rear sight blank which is tapped to hold an extra aperture or to hold the one removed to allow for a 'ghost ring' type shot.
We've been quite pleased with this set-up.

I only replaced my rear sight with a Lyman 66 & couldn't be happier.
