What's your fav small bore centerfire rifle?

by Bryan @, Saturday, October 01, 2016, 19:37 (2913 days ago)

Once I get my Martini Cadet sorted it will be that one. Would like to have a vintage English rook rifle at some point. I have some pistol caliber lever guns that I enjoy. I miss the Browning 53 I let go.

It's interesting that I've not owned many small bore rifles other than lots of rimfires and ARs. What's on your fav list?

Marlin 1889 32/20 rifles.

One? hmmmmm... I like my Contender in

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Saturday, October 01, 2016, 22:20 (2913 days ago) @ Bryan

.22 Hornet and .218 Bee but I also like the Marlin 1894CL in .32-20.

I always wished that Ruger would make a reduced size #1 just for these small cartridges. I like the Australian cadet rifles but don't own one. If I was to buy one the practical side says it should be properly chambered for the .32-20 rather than the .310.

Single shot rifles are always interesting...

by Bryan @, Saturday, October 01, 2016, 22:29 (2913 days ago) @ Hobie

I have a reduced scale Lyman Sharps in 38-55 but they made them in 22 Hornet also. That would be interesting. I haven't seen one but Jared saw one in a shop.

I would like another Cadet in a diff caliber like 327 Federal or 357 mag.

Ruger could probably sell baby #1s but the retooling would be expensive.

Baby #1s are never gonna happen. I considered building one

short rifle [ e20' ] oct barrel, tang sight.....shoots really well.

Only have one......

by Gunner @, St Louis, Sunday, October 02, 2016, 08:35 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

Other than AR's, I only have one small bore rifle.....a Ruger M77 Ultra Lite in 243, easy to carry, love the look of black tipped stock and with 95gr BT's deadly on deer, she is 4 for 4 in hunting.

41 Mags rule, Baers rock!

Hmmm....that's tough.

by Hoot @, Diversityville, Liberal-sota, Sunday, October 02, 2016, 09:09 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

I have the Brno ZBK in both .22 Hornet and .222 Rem. The Hornet is scary accurate but the triple-deuce has some issues I haven't sorted out yet. Miss Melodie claimed the Ruger 77-22 Mag as her own and that is also quite accurate. The .25-20 out of the Husky or the Marlin are a joy. I longed after a Husky in .32-20 at a show yesterday but have been spending money too furiously lately. But I think that'd be a wonderful rifle cartridge. The Martini in .32 SWL is just flat out fun to shoot.

If I had to choose, it would probably be the Hornet but it's really too close to call.

Did you build or buy the Cadet in that chambering? NT

It was chambered that way when I found it.

by Hoot @, Diversityville, Liberal-sota, Monday, October 03, 2016, 05:32 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

I think the barrel was originally a 2-groove Springfield barrel. I had thought about deepening the chamber to .32H&R or even the .327 but, after shooting it for a while, I don't believe I will. It's just too much fun.

Would love to have one in 32 mag or 327 mag. NT

What's your fav small bore centerfire rifle?

by Brian A, Sunday, October 02, 2016, 11:14 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

I love small bore centerfires, but if I had to choose only one it would be a Win 92 SRC in 25 wcf.

Nice. No mention of 218 Bee yet. NT

I have a Bee but it isn't a fav for no particular reason.

So it is rather tough to list it among my favs.

CVA is making their single shot Scout in several calibers

They are dirt cheap and have Bergara barrels. We have one in 223 - it is a sweet little shooter. They make it in 243 and 308. Not sure what other calibers. I paid around $250 with scope at Academy. I have been tempted to pick up one in another caliber but I am trying not to add more calibers to have ammo in stock for. Mine could be the Hunter instead of Scout. I think the Hunter is the cheaper version.

Browning Model 53, Savage 23B, and a Remington 25R...

by JD, Western Washington, Sunday, October 02, 2016, 15:42 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

All in 32-20. I like all three and can't choose between them. The Savage has an original Wollensak scope on it. The Browning is just classic all the way around. The Remington 25R is a factory carbine and weighs about 5 pounds. All three are in almost new condition.

With one of them in my hands, I can almost imagine that I'm back in the 1930's.....

Classy - NT

What's your fav small bore centerfire rifle?

by Slow Hand ⌂ @, Indiana, Sunday, October 02, 2016, 18:32 (2912 days ago) @ Bryan

I don't have many, but of what I have now, 5)3 old Husqvarna .32/20 single shot would be top of the list! Handles nicely and shoots plenty accurate for me.

I got a TC Contender Carbine bbl in .17-223 a while back and am really liking it. Easy to load, cheap and will make prairie dogs fly. Fun little rifle.
