My age is showing...

OK, I give up. I am a hopeless, unrepentant OLD FART. I will not be modernized, upgraded, enlightened, or any of the rest of that millennial crap. Here's the proof:

I went to the Murfreesboro show yesterday with the express intention of buying a S&W Shield 9mm. I have never owned a fantastic plastic DA autoloader, and I figured it was time I did, since everyone else seems to dote on them. So off I went, money in hand, to join the modern age.

I found several Shields for decent prices. They were all still there when I left with a VERY nice 1972 vintage S&W Model 40 Centennial.

I guess I just ain't cut out fer modern times........

Good choice!

I've tried a lot of different newest bestest ever pocket pistols, and for me, NONE compare to my 70's vintage M-38 Airweight Bodyguard.

I have two, a Glock19 and a 357 LCR. I keep one of them on me at all times when I'm working-as a mechanic in the Texas heat. I kinda like the LCR but the Glock is just a tool. I can sweat on them and they don't rust. But when I get home I carry a 4" GP100 pretty much everywhere else. I much prefer a tradional revolver. I really need to pick up a 3" 686+...especially if I could find one without a lock. The holy grail would be a pre-lock 686 Mountain Gun:)

My age is showing..-- best tactical advice from 3-gun ...

nephew. very successful and competitive; long time CCW carrier. And advocate of Shield..asnd apparently it also pretty popular wit his peeps. Soooo....have a good assortment of J's, in diff configs, and calibers. Can carry and have carried assorted cals and makes. F'r instance, visits to Detroit require a Glock, and dress according. going about my daily biz,I illogically carry those very tactical-limited J's...... Rational? wishful thinking? Talisman against harm? Rejection of good tacky Doctrine. Human stupidity?

However, it happens that the daily 'leaving the house' gun is 99% a J-of some sort. Sometimes, two.. they just uck away, so handy like, the LW versions are no burden of belt-hitcher-upper.

Yup, irrational, vis-a-vis 'doctrine. I will say that if worked behind a public-access counter -- with qa cash register -- ANYWHERE.....it'd be a compact Glock -- or similar. and a J. As well, a vehicle also gives accessible storage for the casewd AR, and mags.

What really gets dicey, to me, is traveling to unfamiliar territory, or say, mistakenly driving into someplace like New Jersey, while traversing unfamiliar territory.

Interesting question, and look forward to seeing other replies and Raison D'et.

Being "Old School"

by Murphy @, Monday, June 27, 2016, 08:04 (3010 days ago) @ Catoosa

I read long ago a quote from an old school shooter in regards to packing guns for saving your hide.

"All a fella needs, is a 1911 and a J frame Smith & Wesson". He was a wise individual no doubt.

Lets face it, the majority of us here along the decades have owned a lot of guns, and a lot of those got traded off or sold for the next big thing that came down the pike. Lord knows I've spent a young fortune playing that game.

I can't complain though, it's kept me off the streets. Besides, had it not been for my love of those old revolvers and such...I would have never found this board and some of the best people on earth I 'friends'.

I am old school in many ways but my EDC is an XD9 Compact or an XDs9, sometimes a Star PD. I have found that I actually shoot my XDm9 5" better than any 1911 I currently shoot, and I've been shooting 1911's for 50+ years. For the range, I really enjoy shoot any of my old or new guns, but accuracy now days is mostly the XDm platform. I don't know why, I just accept it and enjoy.

I feel y'all's pain... I really do.

Just before dark yesterday I was going to lock up my chickens and saw a bean eating young rabbit in the yard at about 25 yards.

I had a Vaquero (.45) and decided to remove the bean eating rabbit.

I know the Vaquero has sights because I could feel them in the fading light.

I just couldn't see them all that well.

Long story short...

last round got the bunny.

Humbling.

And I feel your pain. Just put a new sight on my Smith 67 so I could see them.

I'm having a new thinner front sight put on my 686 so I can see some daylight on either side rather than a solid bar.

I definitely like daylight on either side of the front blade

+1 on the sights - I have to have some light or either side of the front blade. I've had astigmatism all my life, and iron sights always have fuzzy stuff growing on them. I discovered the cure years ago when I bought a well-used Colt Detective Special that shot 'way to the left. I started working on the rear notch with a set of needle files, and by the time I got it shooting to the sights the rear notch was at least half again as wide as it started out. I discovered that I could actually center the front sight in the big notch just like a fellow is supposed to do when he shoots. I do that to most all of my pistolas now, even the ones with adjustable sights.
