They are hard to find, but I am partial to the old BAR slings. Exactly like a Garand sling, but several inches longer. No one has yet come up with a simpler and/or quicker method of adjusting a sling than the old GI clamp. The only drawback I have found to it is that the sling material has to be of a certain thickness for it to clamp securely, or you have to glue a leather pad inside the clamp so it clamps tightly.

Several of my long guns have an extra sling swivel installed on top of the stock just ahead of the buttplate so that the sling is on TOP of the gun. The gun then hangs right-side-up across your body leaving your hands free, but you can grab the grip and point it quickly. Looks weird but works slick.
