I need some place to store my pistol during a boot camp graduation so I don't get ruffed up by the MPs:)

What route are you taking in? (nm)

Off the top of my head, I believe it's I-20 to I-77 and then south to the base.

Okay

Then you won't be coming by my place. Figured if you were coming in from farther north I still might be able to help you out.

I hear tell "some folks" stored them under the back seat...

of the truck. Now, it's been a few years so I don't know if that would fly today but I heard it happened....

You don't know how tempted I am, but....

Considering how important this is to my youngest son I just don't want to risk it. What I need to do is capitalize on this and find a way to open a business by every military base, just outside the gate, that will let you lock up personal items that you don't want to carry onto the base...24 hour access:)

I hear that Rob.

One of my sons graduated basic at Ft. Jackson in 2000(?). I wouldn't have wanted to mess that up. I expect security is a bit different these days.

Drop em at a gun shop for storage, get a reciept.

Interesting...I'm glad they had some common sense:)

When my oldest graduated from his MOS at Fort Sill I called and they said "sure, t
Just tell the guard at the gate you have a weapon and they'll either make sure it's locked and unloaded or they may hold onto it until you leave, but no problem". Well, it was a big problem. They pulled us over to the side and kept us there until we were almost late for his grad ceremony. They finally said just make sure it's unloaded, locked in a box and the ammo separated (which it was) and let us go. They were really friendly and just wanted to talk guns with me while I was in an urgent hurry to not be late. They were pulling about every three to four cars over and checking them anyhow. This time I'd just as soon stay out of trouble. I sure don't want to go without weapon though. These days if I was going on a trip I'd be taking a pistol AND an AR15. The military base sure screws up everything.

Had a similar thing happen at Naval Station Mayport..

not too long after 9/11. My niece was getting married in the chapel on the base and my wife and I were staying at the Navy Inn on the base. After driving all day, I forgot I had a revolver in my glove compartment. When we got there, they searched my car, and the inevitable happened.

I had to call my brother-in-law, at that time he was a Captain and the XO on the Kennedy at the time. I got him up in the middle of the night, he had to get dressed and come over to the base. He was pretty pissed at me, and I kind of felt sorry for the guard. I don't know what happened but they were holding us in a separate room, and after he came out. The guard apologized, I told him it was my dumb ass fault, and I'd make it right. They kept the revolver while I was staying at the Inn, and gave it to me when I left to come home.

Call the local sheriff's office before you go...

They may let you lock them up there. The local sheriff's office has a wall of lockers in the lobby for CCW's to lock up their sidearm prior to entering the courthouse.

No muss, no fuss, no paperwork. Just show licence to carry to the deputy at the metal detector and lockup your piece and take the key until you are done with your business.

Tell the sheriff the truth about attending the graduation and desire to not break regs with a weapon on the Army Base. You might be surprised with the slack they cut you.

Also, here you can call the MP's office ahead of time and let them know you are coming, for what and when and will have a weapon in your car. They will keep it safe and sound for you until you are done.

Also, be aware that the policy for entering a base has changed the last year. Make sure that you have a pass to get through the gate. If you don't you can't.

Regardless, don't try to sneek it in. Its a bad bad thing to get caught.

I have the passes ordered. I've already called the MPs and got a "No way!" That's a great idea about the Sheriff's Office. I'll give them a call and see how that goes. Thanks Byron.

I am retired and absolutely do not carry on a post...

I would rather die than go through all that crap with about zero benefit.
