Sheriff Who Doesn’t Trust People To Carry Firearms Shoots Himself In The Hand

By Robert Gehl - 338 Comments • In US

Without being insensitive: If you’re cleaning a loaded weapon, you deserve to be shot in the hand.

That’s what happened to Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone, a pro-gun control sheriff in Iowa, WQAD is reporting.
He negligently discharged his personal handgun while he was cleaning it late Wednesday night, and shot himself in the left hand according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. He was taken to a local emergency room for treatment and was later admitted to surgery to repair his hand. The injuries are not life-threatening.

Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone

Johnstone is infamous for his disdain for citizens carrying firearms. The Iowa Firearms Coalition (IFC) reports the sheriff opposes open carry laws. Five years ago, after a new state law required sheriffs in Iowa to grant firearm carry permits, he said it was a “recipe for disaster.” He has supported expanding “gun-free zones,” saying the new law would lead to “wild west shootouts” in the state. Of course, none of it was true. Not one word. The crime rate in Iowa has actually gone down since “open carry” became the law of the land. Of course, as the IFC points out, it’s ironic that a sheriff who doesn’t trust his citizens to carry firearms himself didn’t have the wits about him to unload his sidearm before proceeding to clean it.

Maybe we need a “gun-free zone” around the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department offices. Just for the good sheriff’s own protection

He proved himself right.

Some people shouldn't own guns.

Shot himself in the left hand taking his Glock 20 duty gun apart. Dropped the mag but didn't clear the chamber. Pulled the trigger as you must to release the striker for takedown and blammo.

1911 in the safe is because it's alway on my side:) It ain't pretty and it really doesn't feel as good in the hand but it is a better carry gun in every way. I hate to say that with all my heart but it's simply true. If I have to shoot someone with it and hand it over to be thrown in an evidence locker, I can go buy another one just like it, take some sandpaper to the frame and trigger guard and make it fit my hand in 30 minutes and have a gun that is 100% reliable. I'd be ticked if a cop told me to hand over my 1911.

Rob, I make fun of Glocks because it's easy.

And, some folks, though none here, get all defensive. Kinda like making fun of .41 Magnums and .270's.

Melodie has a 42. I have to say, it has never, not even slightly, bobbled, choked, or failed to feed whatever I've conjured up. The projectiles always come out the dangerous end and they always go where they are pointed and the only problem would originate with the "pointer". A fella could do a lot worse.

I'll probably keep making fun of them though. ;-)

I make fun of em too:)

You and I need to share an 'above teenage' beverage one day.

JMB invented the Glock

by Andrew @, Bloomington, IN, Thursday, December 24, 2015, 17:57 (3196 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

His first pistol was the model 1900, which was striker fired like Glocks. He also developed the tilting breech barrel, which is used in Glocks. Therefore, JMB invented the Glock.

True that...
