A boring 30'06 question

I am going to need to buy some brass for the used Vanguard I picked up last week So I am wondering if any of you fine folks have a preference for one brand over another? I also bought a factory refurbished Zeiss Conquest from Midway, that was a mistake, the only thing factory refurbished was the box. The glass looks like crap.

Dave

I like Federal, if you can get it.

Winchester would be my 2nd choice, if you can get it.

Thank sir!

I may be able to get my hands on some Winchester.

+1 on Fed or Win

If your feeling particularly rich, watch PowderValley for Lapua.
They've been out of stock for a while. The longest lasting I ever used was some Sako I got as an odd box on a country store shelf of 155 semi round loaded rounds back in the 1900's.

I have always normally run mine about midway between listed starting and max loads, with H4895 or IMR 4350 and get good life from it.

You should be able to send the glass back. Fed and Win are good, but I also have had good service from RP if you can't get them.

Get a good Leupold. Zeis makes some excellent glass,But

the Conquest series was built to compete for the US market and they downgraded the line to get the price point.

The glass is defintely clearer than my VX 3

by Dave B @, Alamogordo New Mexico, Monday, October 05, 2015, 13:31 (3341 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

Overall the quality isn't quite on par with Leupold. One thing the Zeiss has that I really appreciate, is the eye relief is exactly the same at 9X as it is at 3X, first scope I have bought that did this. I am going to return it, and see about a 3-9x40 VX II.

I have a Conquest 3.5x10 with the 600yd rapid-z reticle.

by John K., Monday, October 05, 2015, 15:18 (3341 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

Works fine; you just have to remember the rangefinder shifts with the magnification. Reticle is too fine for normal hunting in AL - but it isn't really a hunting scope. Much prefer a Leupold M8-6x heavy duplex for that.

Way better than the cheaper Leupold versions; in comparable priced 'scopes, probably little difference.

Check into the Nightforce SHV series

I just got a 5-20 and it's da bomb.

I prefer Winchester....

by JD, Western Washington, Monday, October 05, 2015, 14:40 (3341 days ago) @ Dave B

Federal is good too. Winchester seems to have the most powder capacity. Remington is good brass, but usually quite a bit heavier than Winchester, so if you switch from Win or Federal to Remington, you may have to reduce your load a bit....

Despite the fact that it fouls so quickly

I am loving this rifle! I like the price $275, I like the fit, and surprisingly enough for this magnum and 45/70 lover, I am loving going back to my 30-06 roots. With modern bullets, I wouldn't feel bad if it were all I had to hunt with.

My most used brass is mil spec that was originally "clipped" for an M-1; this years deer load is in old, old Remington that pre-dates my current '06. I have a wide assortment, stuff from practically every company including Hansen and S&W!

I have a Heinz 57 stock of '06 brass that has been accumulating--and getting used up--for 15 years. I've also got an old 670 Winchester that don't seem to care... 3 shots of two different loads (Hornady plain base and boat-tail 150 grain bullets, H4895 all around) at 300 yards from mixed cases. Not match accuracy for sure but plenty good enough for anything I'm likely to do with it.

Thank you one and all for your replies!

Just got an email from Midway USA.

They've got Winchester brand brass on hand.
