One of my grail guns is home

I'm primarily a Smith & Wesson man, but I've always had a few Rugers too. I have wanted a birth year gun (1960 for me) for a long time, but it seems that 1960 model S&W's are out of my price range.

Then I found this beauty, and had to have it. It's an unmolested 1960 Super Blackhawk, 4 digit serial numer (49xx) and in fantastic condition. It's even got real stag grips. The plum colored loading gate is about the only "flaw" on it, it has that high polish blue that is spectacular. The grips have no markings on them, so no idea who made them, they are too thick for me so I'll probably get a set of Grashorns for it.

It's close, a flat top 44 Mag. Ruger told me it shipped in early 1961, so work on it probably began in 1960. Ruger must have started over with Serial Numbers for the Super Blackhawk because this one is 245xx.

THOSE GRIPS COULD BE THINNED DOWN TO FIT YOUR HANDS AND BE LESS ROUGH FEELING.

Thank you sir ...

I knew about the plum colored bluing being common, but it's the only part on this gun that has turned "plum".

Any suggestions on who might thin these grips for me? I prefer the zero bark, or bone looking grips. I had thought I'd just buy a set from Pat Grashorn and put these away.

Thank you sir ...

Do a search for I believe it is William Jennings in Buffalo, Wyoming. He did some elk grips for me and smoothed all the bark off so they looked like ivory with small flecks of brown. I bet he would thin these down and smooth them off for you.

I like it!

I don't have any Supers in my little OM Ruger pile, but that one that nice would be gladly added if I found it.

and a "Magnum"!!! Shades of St Elmer looked over my shoulder, as I decimated my farm relatives' woodchucks and nuisance mammals. A Lee Loader, and awaaay that young man went. Thanks for the pic and congrats on y'r good fortune. It brings me a smile, this AM.

I love the looks of the stags but don't think I'd much like exploring the high end of the .44 with them.
