Just in case...

Figured I needed some back up, in case I run out of ammo. I made this the last several evenings. Now to fashion the atlatl. Wish it was legal to hunt with here. Someone told me atlatls are legal in several states, but I don't know.

Yes, I do. My wife just completed a prehistoric Indian mural for the State Museum in the Polk building. I...well...posed as a model for several of the figures. The site that the new Sounds ball park is on, was a major Mississippian Indian salt making site. If you ever have reason to be in the Polk building, they just installed it. Also, if you look at the other ones, I posed for many of them. Not my finest hour, but you know what they say: "Happy wife; happy life!"

A little over 33 years ago, my wife was commissioned to paint all twelve murals for the "Prehistoric Indians of Tennessee" exhibit. They complement the Thruston Collection, which is part of the permanent exhibit. It's the reason we moved to Tennessee in '82. It took her two and a half years to complete them. Over the years, she's done murals for the Trammel Crow Company to commemorate Civil War battles, She was commissioned to do a portrait of Sequoyah for the Eastern Band of the Cherokees, there's a lot of her stuff around. She's been out in Texas the last week, there might be another long term project on the horizon, we'll see.

I think you said you work downtown, go check 'em out.

I kind a hate to admit this, but...

That's neat...would like to see her work but never get to that part of the country.

by stonewalrus, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 08:12 (3314 days ago) @ pokynojoe

But they moved us to the Tennessee Tower two years ago which is at 8th and Charlotte. I have to be a little more ambitious to get to anything downtown now.

Come on Tom! you're just a few blocks away...

Stretch your legs on your lunch hour one day and check it out, it's pretty interesting.

I probably will when the heat backs off - don't do well in

lucky man. if i get to that part of the country i would like to see these works. it is one of my favorite subjects to being with. my ancestry, including Cherokee, is from that area.

Here ya go...

Here's a link to a couple of her murals. The guy in the middle of the Mastodon painting is me. It measure about 6 feet by 6 feet.

You can find lots of her stuff, just do a search. Ignore the "Attorney" part, she saw the light about four years ago and retired from the practice.

Thanks for the link below also. If you ever take a notion to come this way, just let me know!

Yea, I guess I've been "lucky in love." However, you gotta remember: For every action, there's an equal an opposite reaction! kinda like a sine curve. 'nuff said about that.

impressive works and impressive credentials ! amazing

Fontana dam was created. He lived in Cable Cove and over on Hazel Creek before the Smokey Mtn Park was created. Also spent part of his childhood in Cades Cove where his uncle ran one of the water powered mills. great country there.

he grew up playing stick ball etc. and always look me to the fair and we watched the stick ball game, and went down and talked to the players afterward.

thank you.....really good memories :-P

My first cousin's husband's family hails from Cades Cove

There is a pond there named after them - Gourley Pond

They still play, usually in early September...

by pokynojoe, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 15:43 (3314 days ago) @ cable

They have tournaments at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, just down the road from me in Vonore, TN. They reenact the assault on Fort Loudon also. Guess what? The Cherokee still wipe 'em out!:-D :-D

When I lived in Mississippi, The Choctaw used to hold the World Championship Stickball Tournament in Philadelphia, MS. Anybody who's never seen it, if you think football or hockey is rough, you need to check out stickball, it can be pretty brutal. Roughest game I've ever witnessed.

very true...non-stop mayhem !!

That's mighty neat, Joe. I have an old Springfield bayonet blade with the tang broken off that would make up into a dandy spear. I need to hunt that thing up and get started on the project.

they are legal in several states....there is even a society

or such of folks who use them.

Well... how about that, pretty neat'o...

by pokynojoe, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 06:56 (3314 days ago) @ cable

I wish it were legal here. I'm gonna set up one of my 3D targets and see what I can do by just throwing it out a my tree stand. I think I'm gonna have to make an atlatl, though. I put a little more weight in the "head" to get a little more FOC, but I still don't think I can throw it with enough umph.

Legal in Missouri. mn

Wow! "A dart 5 to 8 feet in length"...

by pokynojoe, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 08:57 (3314 days ago) @ TomC

COOL! Have you ever done it? Do you know anybody that has ever hunted with one?

I thought we had liberal game laws, it looks like the only thing you all can't use is a rock! And I haven't had time to read all the restrictions, so that may even be legal!

I think my "dart" may be a little too heavy though, may have to go back to the drawing board.

The MDC announced 2 or 3 years ago

that a hunter killed a deer with one. First one in 10,000 years or so they figured.

by Brian A, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 08:23 (3314 days ago) @ pokynojoe

I played with a few spears as a kid. Getting the balance just right can be a bit tricky and it can take a lot of practice to throw one hard enough to do any good and so it hits point forward. Have very little experience with an atlatl, they only increased the difficulty level for me.

Hey Brian, how's your Mom and Pop doing...

by pokynojoe, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 09:02 (3314 days ago) @ Brian A

Tell them I said hello. How's the deer population looking this year in the "North Country"? I was out hanging stands at a new property I'm hunting this year and I'm a walking "chigger bite." It seems no matter what I use, I can't keep them pesky critters off me.

Hey Brian, how's your Mom and Pop doing...

by jgt, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 15:11 (3314 days ago) @ pokynojoe

If all else fails dust yourself with sulfur dust. Around the pants cuffs, shirt cuffs, and around your neck. Some folks put it around their waist. It smells like sulfur and isn't the most pleasant smell in the world, but you will think it is worth it when you are chigger free. I keep an empty vanilla extract bottle filled with alcohol with three or four aspirin dissolved in it for doctoring chigger bites. Shake well, apply with a Q-tip.

Thanks, I've heard of folks using sulphur...

by pokynojoe, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 16:00 (3314 days ago) @ jgt

I'm usually prepared and dressed accordingly, but this was a kind of the spur of the moment thing.

They use to not bothering me so much, but ever since my radiation treatments four or five years ago, well, it's like my whole hide is on fire. I use to get stung by all kinds of bees and what not on my job, not much problem. Now I have to carry an epipen.
I guess getting "fried" compromised my immune system or something. All I know is, I hate the damn things.

Hey Brian, how's your Mom and Pop doing...

by Brian A, Saturday, August 29, 2015, 20:04 (3313 days ago) @ pokynojoe

They are doing great, thank you, will pass along your greeting. Hopefully you and yours are doing very well all around and Miss Elizabeth is enjoying the great southwest.

The deer population is about the same as the couple hunting seasons, which is a blessing considering we've had three rough winters in a row. The spring of 2013 saw over a hundred dead deer in the yard here.

I don't envy you the chiggers at all, the few ticks we get up here is bad enough. When working in the field I get razzed all the time for wearing protective clothing, but have much fewer problems than most of my colleagues, so don't mind their teasing a bit.
