280 Remington loads?

by StoneWolf, Wednesday, June 03, 2015, 13:47 (3465 days ago)

I'm acquiring a Ruger No. 1 (always wanted one) in 280 Rem, and was wondering if anyone had any experience in reloading for one. The local shop had ammo in stock, wasn't a bad price but I know I can do it cheaper once I get the brass. Can use any advice you can give me, bullets, powder brand, etc. preferably of a few different levels of stoutness; like target rounds, deer rounds, hog rounds. I figure pairing it with my 44 I'll have a nice hunting setup.

Thanks in advance,
SW

Awful cartridge. Save yourself the frustration and....

just send the rifle to me. No need to thank me on this.

Seriously though, the .280 is one I have been eye-balling but I really have it surrounded with the 7x57/7-08 on one side and the 7mm Ackley on the other. Of course, "need" was shot by so fast and so long ago, it's more philosophical these days.

I do not load for this but I have always thought this fella was pretty sensible => http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase/.280+Remington.html

Oh yes, watch those No. 1's; they have a way of becoming habit forming. And, congratulations!

Thanks I'll check it out, and I doubt I'll get another No. 1 next on the list is a 1885 High Wall with tang sight or an 1851 Navy Colt.

A very handy cartridge! You can use a wide range of bullett

weights, but it really does great with 140s. You can hand load it up to 7mm mag territory. Get a Ackly Improved chamber clean up. That and a .338 are all a man really needs for the US.

.338 is way to much gun for anything around here.

hunt somewhere else;-) In the mean time you'll have an excellent cartridge for everything else in that 280 Rem, which was my point.
Load data in the current books is fine.

doesn't mean I can't have African guns."

Nothing here in MN that needs anything more than an '06 but we hunt with all variety of things. 'Tis the 'spice of life' after all.

280 Remington loads?

Here in the U.S. We have Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, Hippo, UFO, and all manor of yet to be cloned dinosaurs, Mastodon, and Pterodactyl. Throw in a black helicopter or two and you just can't get a big enough gun.:-D

Drone loads?

We're getting quite a few drones showing up around here. Some people seem to think it's great fun to fly them around over other peoples' property just to see what's there that they can post on YouTube. Would a standard 12 gauge load of BBs out of a tight choke take down one of these contraptions, or should I go to magnum goose loads?;-)

Go with a full auto pellet/BB gun...

Great cartridge but stay away from Remington brass

by Fowler, Thursday, June 04, 2015, 14:06 (3464 days ago) @ StoneWolf

I have one I have shot for years, great gun, I think a 160gr Nosler Partition is all that rifle ever needs for big game in North America. I have taken several elk with the combo and it just plain works.

The only issue is brass, It is a bit hard to find and almost always what is available is soft Remington brass that survives 1 or 2 stiff loadings. If you find Norma or Winchester grab it, my standard load kills Remington brass in 2 loading (its not that warm either)but I am on about my 10th loading in Win brass and it is going strong still.

Enjoy, I also have a soft spot for No.1 rifles...
