FS: Reblued 5" S&W Heavy Duty 38/44, 38 Spec

FS: Reblued S&W Heavy Duty 38/44 in 38 Special, with a 5" barrel. S/N is S72194, which puts it around 1947-1948. This is a transition gun, with the humpback hammer and pre-war long action, making a rather scarce gun, if it was in original condition. Gun has been reblued over some surface wear/pitting. It didn't show very well in the pictures with flash so I took pictures without it to try to show the finish wear. Nothing awful, but they are there. Hammer and trigger were reblued as well. Bore is good. Grips are more modern magnas that have been re-varnished and show wear.
If you are looking for a collector grade gun, this isn't it. Would make a great shooter, or base gun for a conversion (41 Spec, 44 Spec, 45 Colt, etc..)

I have s/n S72410 and, other than being a 4", appears to be the twin to yours. What all makes it a 'transition gun'?
Mine is all matching, frame, barrel, cylinder, ejector and grips. I think it was reblued but they did a fine job of it.

Long action vs. short action intermingling.

You'll know if you have a long action gun by lack of modern internals and the feel of the trigger, generally. The slide hammer and S serial number generally mark the beginning of the short action postwar guns, about 1946 if I recall.
However S&W used up parts as the went, and so there are short action guns with long action hammers, varying extractor knob diameters and various barrels and markings.
Mine is S75 something and is the latest transition type I've heard of, but had been bumper chromed at some point. It rides in a Barranti "Raider" holster and the boys consider it, appropriately, the Indy rig.
