$20.00 and a little elbow grease

In the mid-60s, Herretts came out with their first off the shelf grips called "Shooting Star". The wood was a very pedestrian light walnut and the checkering was coarse. For an extra $10.00, you could get the "Presentation Shooting Star" grips. The latter came with very good walnut and no checkering to hide the wood.

Last month I picked up a beat up early pair of Presentation Shooting Star grips for the Colt "I" frame DA revolver. They were dinged up and the finish had blistered. In general they looked terrible.

Today after a rehab, I put them back on my 5" Official Police. This is what $20.00 and a little elbow grease will get you these days.

I like dark walnut, but

I didn't want to use a strain on these grips. I started with 10 hand rubbed coats of boiled linseed oil and then 15 coats of Tru-Oil for a hard high gloss finish.

The BLO darkened the wood considerably and the Tru-Oil has some slight color to it as well. Together they produced a color that shows off the grain. The pics are a pretty accurate representation of the color.

Charles, those are really beautiful stocks. Shooting Stars are some of my favorite custom stocks - you just have to remove all the oversized, ugly wood and crude checkering on the outside.....

I've got part of a bottle of Tru-Oil that's over 40 years old. I have to strain it through pantyhose each time before I use it, but it gives the most gorgeous golden finish to a piece of walnut that I have ever seen. I use it sparingly, and I guess I'll have to quit buying old beatup Herrets when it's finally gone.
