Basic thoughts on Browning BLR?

I have been fascinated with this rifle for years. I bought one in .243 because at the time, I wanted a .243. It shot well and I liked it, except that I decided I really didn't want one in .243 anymore. I let it go and later bought a 7-08 version. I really liked that one but it would hang up on extraction like the rounds were too hot...factory Remington ammo. I don't remember all I did or tried with it but I got rid of it. Now I'd kinda...well, no, REALLY....want one in .308. They basically lock up like a bolt gun so it should handle the pressures just fine I would think. I'm not sure why my 7-08 was finicky. Wait a second or two after the shot and it would pop right out after it cooled a second (my guess). Anyhow, before I get all hot to trot and gung-ho about buying another, I'm just wanting some feedback. If I get another and it gives me grief, Browning will get it back until it's right.

I picked mine up years ago, used. It's an old steel receiver 81, it's a little beaten up and the stock has been refinished by a mediocre hand. No problem; I took it home for $400 and haven't looked back.
It shoots well, carries nicely, and hits hard, as you know. No extraction problems on this end.
I mounted a 1.25-4x scope but was unhappy with the rings. EGW makes a 1913 rail, but I'm not sure it will fit my older receiver. I believe that there is also a forward scope mount available for late model rifles as well.
The current crop are interesting to me, especially the new Michael Bane inspired synthetic takedown version. I'm not sure what chamberings they have added to that particular model.
I'm a little bit stunned by how expensive they are now, and that it's such a challenge to find a good condition used example for sale anywhere, let alone at a "no sweat" price. Same with extra magazines.
I still think they make an excellent, nearly readymade general purpose rifle, whether you call it a "Scout" or not. I've never had any problems with debris getting into the gears, but that seems to be why all the Official Scout Enthusiasts Club look down their noses at the design.

make a perfect all around go-to rifle. It's a levergun so that satisfies the traditional aspect...sorta (and I just have a thing for leverguns!). It's pretty walnut and blued steel, it locks up like a bolt gun and feeds from a magazine and what can be a better all around go-to rifle cartridge than the .308 (I know, several rounds qualify but the..308 will pretty much do it all). This will be my next rifle quest I believe.

I have an unfired stainless lightweight takedown I'd cut you a deal on. :)

I really want a short action, preferably .308 or .358. Don't have the spare change for one right now anyhow...just starting my stalk so to speak:)
