AR15 light mounting...suggestions wanted...

by rob @, Friday, January 02, 2015, 17:04 (3553 days ago)

I need to mount a light on my AR carbine. Taking it hog hunting soon and it would be great if I could find a good mount for a light. When not hunting a good bright tactical light would be good but while hunting hogs at night, something a little less intense is best. The only rail on the gun is the sight base on top of the gas block other than the top of the receiver where my scope is mounded. If there was an offset mount that clamped to the top of the gas block that might work well. Open to suggestions. I really don't want to mess with changing the hand guard. Mine is a plain, non floated round hand guard. I guess a quad rail replacement would work but I'm not really a fan. I'd like to leave it as close to where it is right now...slim, trim and not bulky or cluttered.

There are 45 degree offset rail mounts out there made for the 3 gun crowd (and used by other groups *cough*). I've seen them in Brownells, but you can Bing around for them for a better price.

I have, among other more expensive light mounts, a plastic rail mount that a plastic surefire flashlight fits in rather neatly.

This + a one inch ring and a one inch in diameter surefire light and you've got it. Simple and inexpensive. Works great.

I have the Armalite front sight that mounts to my gas block. I'd have to install the sight first but that may well work.

If your gas block has a rail on top to mount the sight, just put a scope ring on it. I've done that too. I just used a cheap Weaver ring and a Surefire 6p and later a 9p.

That may actually work...

I have a couple plastic surefires and if I can use some almost gone batteries it might just work. You just don't want to light them up with a Surefire and hot new batteries.

The plastic surefires are bigger in diameter.

mike 'em. a 30 mm might work.

I used the plastic rail mount with plastic Surefire overseas

At one time I had a picture of that rig floating around. Had the light mounted so I could hit the button on the light with my thumb from the vertical fore grip. Worked like a charm.

Also, if you are not using a vertical fore grip,

you will want a pressure switch to run the light.

I do it one of 3 ways. My hogs are mostly nocturnal so a light really helps.

First is a ring that goes on a scope then put the flashlight on the Weaver base.

The second is a small section of a rail bolted on your standard hand guard. I am not sure if this is the one I have or not, mine bolts through the vent holes on the guard.

The third is a universal clamp style mount that can go on the scope, barrel, gas block ect.

They all work none are very heavy duty but they are good enough for hunting hogs in my pasture. I would suggest getting a green light they don't spook the hogs as bad as a white light does.

Saw the green lights...

Below on the page for the Nebo light clamp. That may work out well. Thanks for the tip on the light!

You could go with a pair of hose clamps and an existing

flashlight.

It works, is almost free, and if you line the clamps with inner tube, errr, Ranger Bands, won't mark your foreend. Someone here or on FB posted a Larry Vickers column about a similar carbine setup that he ran during GW1 to good effect.

Filter gels for the flashlight are easy to find online, if you don't have access to any locally.

Or you can go with a fancier, shmancier solution if you plan to keep the light mounted more permanently.

thats a great idea...

You would think a professional wrench would have thought of that already but...:) It looks like I have all kinds of options and I sorta thought they'd be limited due to the lack of quad rails and all that I don't really have or want on my gun. With a dual set of dual hose clamps I could even shim the light around to point ropight where I want it to.

Do it like this.....

Works like a charm. It would not be good for high volume fire as the gas block gets too hot, however for anything else it it perfect.

One thing for sure, If Kyle sells it, it's good stuff.

And it's not expensive and generally a light like that would be for a hunting or home defense situation, neither of which would get the gun real hot, if at all. I may well just do this.

Looks like a good solution....

I have a compact light mounted on my "night" 870 with a clamp mount on the extension mag, and a cable tie to "adjust" it to hit where the sights look. Crude as can be, but it has stood up to 12 gauge recoil for several years. Butt of the flashlight is right ahead of the forend where I can punch the button with my left thumb.

Cobbled up as a temporary rig several years ago, intending to get something better later, but it's still working.....

I have had one of those mounts for several years. Bought as a package with a plastic Surefire light. It has been on several long guns, an M-14 first, then several AR's and even a couple of shotguns!
