McKinney, Little Elm, Frisco and Mobile Home Advice....

A pretty off topic question but hoping maybe some of you can give some good advice. My wife drives a package car for UPS and she's being transferred from DFW airport to the new McKinney hub they are building. That's a pretty long drive from Kennedale and we're thinking of moving. The homes in McKinney and nearby cities seem to be pretty high priced compared to ours here in the southern area of the metroplex and we'd really like enough land to be able to shoot on. Getting into the smaller towns like Anna, Melissa, Van Zandt, etc. we are finding some good properties in the 130-150k range but most of them have mobile homes on them. My grand parents lived in a mobile home in Conroe most of my life and it's still standing but I do kinda worry about it. I'm hoping some of you who do or have lived in them might be able to give me some advice pro or con. And, if you live in that area of Texas anything you want to offer about those towns, taxes, good city, bad city, etc would be greatly appreciated as well.

Also, gun safes....

Can you get a gun safe IN a mobile home to begin with and will the floors support the weight?

I used to do tie down and structural inspections

for manufactured houses. I seriously doubt the floors will support any but the smallest gun safe.

I'm kinda thinking the same thing. I weigh close to 200 pounds and some of them don't feel like they support me but I figured I'd check. I think I'll hold out for a real house

Literally built a support structure under the floor of his manufactured home to support his gun safe, his had room for about 24 rifles with no shelves in it, he had maybe 16 rifles or so, and one Ruger 44 Mag Super Blackhawk that was never very far from his person. He poured a concrete pad, and used blocks to build almost to the floor, then a laminate of plywood until it was actually providing support for the floor. Surely wish he was still around.

Careful, you are talking Tornado alley and a tornado magnet

Seen my share of tornados right here in Arlington, Kennedale and Ft. Worth!

My wife is from West Texas - VERY paranoid about tornados

You don't have to be from Texas to concerned about tornados!

I've family in Joplin.

I've been too close to several myself here in MO, and having worked around the remains of several subdivisions that were plastered, you have to respect what Mother can do if she's upset.

In April 2012 had one drop right outside the shop...

Headed right at us, zig-zaged back and took out a shop down the street about 1/4 mile away. Several more, apx 10, destroyed homes and business all around Kennedale and Arlington and eventually Dallas IIRC. I recorded it with my iPhone only to find as it passed off through the trees and couldn't be seen any more and I hit the record button again to shut it off that I failed to hit record the first time...Grrrr! I hate it when a plan falls apart. There's a part of me that, while I respect their power, loves that kind of weather.
