Anyone here own/shoot a crossbow?

I've been thinking about getting a recurve crossbow for quite a few years. It can be used for hunting here in Washington during rifle season in some zones, but is otherwise only for disabled folks.
Not too interested in hunting with one, but the whole idea is intriguing to me, the more so as arthritis, back issues, and elbow problems have impacted my bowmanship with long or recurve bows. Have been looking at the Tenpoint GT Flex, along with some mid-range Excaliburs.
Any comments?

For a recurve bow Excalibur is about the best. J.Michael
Not a recurve style but I just ordered one

I bought a Mission this past week. Should be at the shop this coming week. We can use them the last 2 weeks of archery. I plan to let my son hunt with it with me. I'm going to stick to my compound bow.

While I do not consider myself a "deer hunter", I do have a bit of experience in going to where they are and shooting them.
I bought a Barnett Predator some years ago and have killed a few whitetails with it.
Crossbows are handy but not magic. Crossbow bolts don't drop as fast as arrows but still drop at a rate that requires one to adjust for elevation for anything over 25 or 30 yards. They are loud...probably similar to a .22 rim fire rifle. They are expensive to maintain...strings last a couple of hundred rounds and bolts will ALWAYS disappear when shot in the woods. They are heavy and awkward to handle. They are very cool and fun.
Still, they fit my style of shooting deer. I sit in my deer condo and drink coffee and hope that the pesky deer do not bother me while I watch the sun come up.
Sometimes they get the best of me and I kill one or two.
So I do shoot a crossbow some and would love to visit with you and answer your questions. IMO they are no better and no worse that shooting deer with a .308 or a 70 lb compound bow.

Thank you, perfect information.
As it stands, we have two problem deer on our property right now, a buck with a doe, both very full bodied. Last year they completely devastated two cherry trees, and badly beat up three more. Since that is five trees out of an orchard of 150, I figure it could have been worse but I'm not giving them a chance this year.
So far, they have preferred to simply eat my melon plants and cucumbers, but as it cools and the garden disappears, I know apple and cherry trees are next on the menu. I visited Fish and Game and they are ready to issue deprivation tags. They don't simply figure the cost of a replacement tree, but also the the value of what it can be expected to yield over its productive life. I can make a claim against the State for total damages figured thusly, which is why they are so willing to issue tags.
There is one proviso, however. Because we are on 4 acres, and surrounded by small farms of similar size, I've been instructed to use either a bow or a shotgun. I've shot plenty of slugs, but have no experience in the real world with buckshot. And even though crossbows are not legal for hunting except as I noted in my previous post, this isn't really hunting per se. It is more like off the shelf pest harvesting. The deer will let me come as close as 10 yards away, regardless of how noisy or rambunctious I get. Fish and Game considers it a "grey area" but told me to proceed discretely.
Since I posted originally I found an extremely clean Excalibur Exocet 160 for a song. It is old, but was owned by the equivalent of the proverbial little old lady from Pasadena. Came with enough accoutrements to keep me busy for a bit. I'm going to try it out, and if it works out, will use it until it breaks, wears out, or something sexier comes along.

That would be the one! Seemed like a good deal overall. The seller has a solid reputation.
I would have needed another couple of hundred to get into a mid-range priced new Excalibur, or about a hundred more for a bottom of the line Excalibur, so it looked good to a newbie.
From looking at catalogs, websites, and forums, my impression is that crossbows are similar to computers, latest-greatest planned obsolescence. If it killed a deer ten years ago, it will do it today, you betchum Red Ryder.
