More SAA help please

OK...I found the problem. The hand itself is broken and not the spring. Now the problem is finding a new one. Brownells offers two Uberti hands, one with a .150 pin and the other with a .118 pin.

Mine has a .113 pin and does not look like the one Brownells sells. Here is a pic of my hand and a pic of what Brownells sells.

Opinions please...[image][image]

Looks to me like your spring has bent above the pin, otherwise I think it looks like the Brownells item. As for the hand, it does look a little different but I would be inclined to give it a try - but I'm not a Colt SAA expert in any way.

I looked earlier today...

…only saw .118 and .150

I'm wondering if his .113's not supposed to be .118?

Wouldn't surprise me much

to think the wear that broke the hand/pawl reduced the pin by .005". Perhaps soft steels or the like...not implying abuse here, just use.

that the Italian guns very often have softer steel than optimal. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if wear caused the weird size.

My Uberti 45 loved 8 grains of 231 and a 255 RNFP Hornady lead bullet. I could send pop cans flying in the air off hand at 50 yards and hit the 6 inch gong at 100 yards like I was a trick shooter. Impressed a lot of people at the range.

Then the gun started locking up on me. I noticed the area around the firing pin hole was battered so bad that primer metal was flowing back into the area around the firing pin thus preventing cocking of the hammer. So I throttled back the load to 7.2 grains of 231 that just never shot so good. Seems I read that John Linebaugh liked the 8 grain load also for a sort of a close to but higher than standard load

I had to TIG weld up the firing pin hole as there is no bushing on an Uberti ( not sure about a real Colt). Then I had to grind not file (File wouldn't phase the TIG weld) the area down flat and redrill the firing pin hole from the real. All is well now but that is how soft an Uberti is.

…making guns as long as the Italians have, can still not have the metallurgy right. It's usually soft, but sometimes way too hard.

I had a Pedersolli rolling block that did pretty much the same thing as your SAA. The firing pin hole and pin got so bad it got dangerous. (pin sticking out/forward) Luckily I caught before it blew up in my face closing the action hard on a live round.

A little more

The size of the pin really is .113. Today I will measure the ID of the hole on the hammer to see which pin will fit.

My major concern Is the top of the hand. Mine is more or less straight, like a Colt without the pronounced curve like the Uberti.

Yup... this is the same problem I had...

This is the same problem I had when I was trying to fix my Uberti made 1860... I finally got a pawl (Thanks for the correction Rob... GRIN)that was close and I took my grinder and file to it to make it fit... after you measure the pin hole in the hammer... get the closest fitting pawl that has a slightly oversize pin and then either reduce the pin or enlarge the hole in the hammer to fit...

The only other option would be to order a hammer and pawl "set" .. but then you might get into the problem with a "not quite right fit" hammer too... such is the problem with Italian made clones.. parts can change from year to year from the same manufacturer...

Good Luck... GRIN

That is the best solution

The hole in the hammer measures .120 so I ordered the hand with the .118 pin. I should be able to make that fit with a little polishing of the pin. I will reshape the hand and fit it.

This is a PITA but the handgun is just too pretty not to get back running. [image]
